Mississippi Governor to Sign "Religious Freedom" Bill That Some Fear Translates to New, Jim Crow Style, Anti-Gay Bill

Well, I guess it was just a matter of time before one of these "religious rights" bills passed in some state or other, right?

Not all that surprising that that state would wind up being Mississippi, where the bill passed both the state House and Senate, and the governor announced his intentions to sign it into law.

What is being called The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, also known as SB 2681, passed the state House of Representatives by a vote of 79-43, and passed the state Senate by 37-14 this past Tuesday. The stated intention of the bill is to protect citizens from state laws and ordinances that threaten to violate practicing their faith.

Here is a part of the article taken from "Breaking: Mississippi Gov. To Sign Anti-Gay Discriminatory ‘Religious Freedom’ Bill" by David Badash of thenewcivilrightsmovement.com (see link below):

"Gov. Phil Bryant has announced he will sign Mississippi‘s highly-controversial and nationally condemned bill that is being called a license to discriminate against LGBT people, women, and minorities. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act was rammed through the state senate last night by Republicans after it had been returned to a committee several weeks ago. Many had believed the bill was dead."

No such luck, huh?

I doubt that the story will end there, one way or the other. I am guessing that there will be more to hear from this story, as likely challenged will be mounted, and who knows just how far these will go?

But for now, proponents of the bill have succeeded in getting one passed somewhere. It will be interesting to see if, now that one state has actually taken that step to become the first, if others will follow. My guess is that there will be at least one more, if not a few more. But time will tell...

The bill that was passed in Mississippi is called SB 2681, and Governor Phil Bryant has promised to sign it into law.
