Cosmos Top Red Bulls in First Ever Clash Between These Two New York Area Soccer Clubs

Yes, the World Cup has much of the world focusing on soccer that is being played in Brazil, obviously.

But it is not the only soccer in the world being played right now.

The New York Cosmos dominated the New York Red Bulls in the first ever meeting between the two clubs, yesterday at Hofstra University, for the US Open.

Here is a summary by Dylan Butler of MLSsoccer.com (see link below):

A brace by striker Mads Stokkelien and a second-half goal by Alessandro Noselli lifted the New York Cosmos to a thorough 3-0 win over the 10-man New York Red Bulls in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Shuart Stadium Saturday night.

It is important to note, however, that the Red Bulls were without several of their usual starters, though. Again, Dylan Butler tells us:

The Red Bulls were without many of their usual starters, including Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill, Dax McCarty, Roy Miller, and Jamison Olave, for the first-ever meeting between the New York squads. But regardless, the match had a derby-like feel from the opening kickoff.

Mads Stokkelien scored early for the New York Cosmos, and he followed that up late in the game, in the 73 minute, expanding the Cosmos' lead to 2-0.

About minutes later, Alessandro Noselli was able to notch on another goal to remove all doubt, and that score held, as the New York Cosmos were able to secure the 3-0 win.

The Red Bulls were not even able to get a shot on goal throughout the entire second half, and the Cosmos were able, essentially, to get a very convincing win for the first ever meeting between these tow local clubs.

With the win, the Cosmos now await their next opponent, which will either be the Harrisburg City Islands or the Philadelphia Union in the fifth round of the tournament, either on June 24th or the 25th.

On the comments section for the attached Red Bulls, many of the fans were harshly critical of the Red Bulls effort, or perhaps, lack thereof. Many of them were suggesting that this was shameful, and that the Red Bulls never even tried in this contest.  This tournament did mean something, and is an important one in North America. It is a bit surprising that the Red Bulls did not actually go all out to win a bit more than they apparently were trying for tonight.
