Racism Still Mars the Beautiful Game

Well, all of this talk about how great this World Cup has been can be tempered by some of the more sobering points underneath the surface.

One of them, I posted a blog entry about not too long ago, and that being the removal of many of Brazil's poor so that glimmering new stadiums can be built for these events, and for the teeming masses of consumers that will generate money (mostly to those who already have quite a bit).

Now, here is another rather dark, underlying issue that always seems to haunt this sport, specifically, and never really seems to go away: racism.

Yes, it has been quite present in this World Cup. And it just arose to the surface to capture front and center attention, when a neo-Nazi sympathizer ran onto the field during the Germany-Ghana game yesterday, and was escorted off the field by a player from Ghana (without any violence).
