Was E.T. Meant To Be Horror?

I never would have expected this!

Growing up with E.T. having been one of my favorite movies (even though I cried when my parents decided that we would see this, instead of one of the Star Wars movies), there was always a sense of attachment to this movie.

As such, my assumption was always that it was always meant to be exactly what it became: a sweet story of a kindly and wise alien that, for a while, literally and figuratively brings new life and changes to the people he touches, as well as an air of mystery and endless possibilities. It is a sweet tearjerker, and I still remember that when we went to see this movie in the theaters (yes, I am that old), one of the kids even younger than myself yelled out, "Bye-bye, E.T.!", to the laughter of the whole audience.

Well, as it turns out, this sweet movie might just have taken a far more sinister turn, if things had been a little different!

At least, that is, if you take a look at the far scarier images that were some of the early artist conceptions before the movie came out.
