Why Is It Called Soccer in America?

This seemed like something fitting to post on the day that the world's biggest sporting tournament in the world's most popular sport finally gets underway later today.

It always seemed quite the mystery to me, as well, why the sport known as "football" around much of the world is known as "soccer" here in the United States.

Turns out, the English, the same nation that often is quite vocal in their criticism of Americans using the word "soccer" to describe the sport, while using "football" to describe the sport currently most popular in the United States, but which hardly uses the feet, other than for running.

This was a pretty fascinating piece that Yahoo Sports offered today, and I would recommend viewing it, in order to get a better understanding of the different terms describing the most popular sport in the world today, and the one that is also often described as "the beautiful game".
