2014 NFL Preseason Update: Giants and Jets

Well, it's that time of year again!

The Giants and Jets squared off again last night, with the Jets as the hosting team (even though both teams play in the same stadium, one of the teams officially has to "host" this annual game).

And tensions run high between these two franchises, as Kristian Dyer recently wrote in Shutdown Corner (Meaningless preseason game? Not for the Giants and Jets - see link below):

It should come as no surprise that these two teams don't like each other. They share the same New York market and both play at MetLife Stadium, making things too close for comfort. The Giants are the historically better team but the Jets have found confidence in recent years and now have rebuilt with a strong, young core. There is nothing but differences between these two organizations, their fans and even how they conduct business. Apparently, the players and coaching staff don't like each other much either.

This is more than just your average, run of the mill preseason contest. This one actually seems to mean something for both franchises, because unlike other sports, where local teams might meet in the preseason, but will also meet again during the regular season with much more on the line (and possibly the playoffs), these two teams surely will not meet later this season, baring the unlikely scenario that both franchises somehow qualify for the Super Bowl. That would be the only way that these two teams could possibly meet later this season, and few believe that to be a realistic possibility.

But they did meet on Friday night, and it amounted to a battle between the two franchises for bragging rights, essentially.

There was even a trophy involved - a Snoopy trophy that the winner of this annual contest receives as a reward.

And there was a memorable moment, when Matt Simms, son of forger Giants great quarterback Phil Simms, celebrated throwing a touchdown pass by imitating Victor Cruz's salsa dance, although his moves were far from great.

Still, despite that, the Giants managed to win the game, 35-24.

In other preseason news, Johnny Manziel lost the starting quarterback battle in Cleveland to Brian Hoyer. To make matters worse, Manziel was sacked by Rams linebacker Michael Sam, who then celebrated by mocking Manziel in a celebratory dance.

The Rams won the game, 33-14.
