Thursday Night Football Review: New York Giants 45, Washington 14

This game reminded me quite a bit of the 1993 meeting between these same two teams, when the Giants shocked Washington, jumping out to a huge lead en route to a 41-7 blowout win.

This one wasn't quite as lopsided, but it was close to being that kind of a game. The Giants offense looked sharp, and jumped out to a 14-0 lead early.

Like that game 20+ years ago, I tuned into this one kind of late, just around the beginning of the third quarter, and was amazed by what I saw at that point: the Giants held a seemingly comfortable 24-7 lead, and Phil Simms was talking at length about how good the Giants offense looked so far!

Washington fought back, and made it 21-7 late in the second, as they were driving, approaching the red zone. Cousins hit Logan Paulsen at the 19-yard line, when he was stripped of the ball. The fumble, the second turnover of the night for Washington on a night when they committed six turnovers, was perhaps the costliest!

The Giants managed to not only prevent Washington from scoring, but they got a field goal before the half, to expand their lead to 24-7.

Still, Washington had a strong drive to start the second half, culminating in a touchdown that brought the score back to 24-14, which was exactly what they needed. The defense then held the Giants, and when Washington got the ball back again, they were initially starting to look good. I left then, to grab a bite to eat, shave, and get ready for work. It seems that, this season, when I don't watch the G-Men, and so I figured, maybe if I went away from the tv for a while, maybe the Giants would tighten up and not allow Washington back in the game.

It worked. When I turned it on again, the Giants were up 31-14, and were able to make it 38-14 moments later.

And so I returned to finish getting ready, and the Giants were at the goal line, trying to make it 45-14, when I walked out.

Sure enough, they scored, and that wound up being the final score.

NY Giants 45, Washington 14.

I thought that this was going to be a tough game, but the Giants played well all around, and made this look surprisingly easy! It's their second win in a row, the defense looked tough, holding their second straight opponent to 14 points. It should be noted that in every Giants game so far, someone in the game has ended up with 14 points total, and whoever that team is, they wind up losing. The first couple of weeks, it was the Giants. The next couple of weeks, it was the Giants who held their opponents to 14 points total.

Eli Manning completed 28 of 39 pass attempts for 300 yards and four touchdown passes, as well as one rushing touchdown - the first that Washington's defense allowed so far this season!

Washington's Kirk Cousins went 19 of 33 for 257 yards, but with four interceptions and one lost fumble.

A huge, divisional win for the Giants, and they now have a bit of momentum going for them, with a two-game winning streak, following the 0-2 start!
