Sports Update for January 11, 2015

New England Patriots 35, Baltimore Ravens 31

Tom Brady had another memorable day as he passed for 367 yards, and also broke the playoff touchdown record, which was previously owned by Joe Montana.

Yet, the pass that most will remember from this game was not even by Brady, although he played an obvious part on the play.

He threw a pass backwards to Edelman, who then chucked it down the field to Danny Amendola, the open wide receiver, who was able to haul it in and score a surprisingly easy touchdown to tie the game. For the second time on the day, the Patriots had overcome a 14-point deficit to tie the game, which was yet another playoff record. No team had ever overcome two different 14 point deficits to win a playoff game.

Until tonight.

Here's the thing, though: the Patriots seemed to be on the ropes for much of this game. When I was watching it, for most of the game it seemed that the Baltimore Ravens were the better team, and would advance. Obviously, in the end, it did not play out like that. But New England looked beatable, and whoever gets out of today's game, be it Denver or Indy, should take heart as they head to Foxboro for the AFC Championship Game.

Seattle Seahawks 31, Carolina Panthers 17

The Panthers were tough, but the Seahawks were tougher.

In a game where neither defense looked nearly as impregnable as they had in the month or so leading up to this game, the Seahawks defense nonetheless came up big, and were able to make the offensive production hold up for a convincing win.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson has a very good day as he threw 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Seahawks had some serious offensive production against a very tough Carolina defense, although it was the defense of Seattle that came up with the most memorable play, which was the point of no return, if you will, for the Panthers.

The key play in the game that clinched it for Seattle came late in the fourth quarter. The Panthers were driving and in the red zone, looking to cut into a 24-10 lead, when Karn Chancellor sealed the deal for Seattle with an interception of a Cam Newton pass late in the fourth quarter. He raced 89 yards down the field for a touchdown, making it a pick six. It was the worst possible timing for such a play for Newton, and took out what little air remained in Carolina's sails.

Everything seems to bode well for the Seahawks with this win. They became the first team in a decade to win a playoff game as the defending Super Bowl champions, and they will get the chance to host the winner of the Green Bay Packers-Dallas Cowboys game later today.

Fed About to Reach 1,000 Career Wins!

As if Roger Federer did not already have enough accomplishments, he is about to land one that is truly huge!

Only two men in tennis history have achieved 1,000 career wins, but Federer is about to join that elite company!

Right now, he stands at 999 career victories, but obviously, he is going to get that thousandth one in the near future.
