Today is Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day

So, I mentioned in one of yesterday's posts (about the anniversary of the Bergen-Beltsen death camp) that this week was Holocaust Remembrance Week.

Well, today specifically is Holocaust Remembrance Day.

We should all at least take a moment to reflect on the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. We should think of the senselessness of such a genocide. Some things are more important than the routines of our everyday lives. If something like that does not jolt us out of our lethargy, than what will?

The refrain of "Never again" was uttered numerous times in the aftermath of the Holocaust. In truth, however, we have had numerous other genocides since. It has happened in Nigeria, in Cambodia, in Rwanda, in the former Yugoslavia, and in Sudan. It might be happening in Syria and Iraq, where the Islamic State seems almost to be the religious equivalent of the political fascists of the 1930's and 1940's.

We need to remember things like this, because indeed, it does seem true that those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it. With anti-Semitism and fascist leanings on the rise all over Europe and the Middle East these days, and with the United States looking more and more like a dictatorship and less and less like a democracy, we need to remember these chapters of the past, lest we are destined to repeated them.

Please take a look at the following video clip from Israel today:

Okay, I tried to post this video in here, but for whatever the reason, it would not take. I added the link, however, of a video clip from Israel taken on this day, where a siren sounded, and everyone stopped whatever they were doing to take a moment in silence in honor and reflection of the victims of the Holocaust.

Now, that's remembering!

Today is Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust memorial day in Israel. On this day, a single siren is sounded throughout the entire country of Israel. During the siren, everything, everywhere in the country stops. Here is a video of Israelis stopping their car in the middle of the road to stand in remembrance of the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazi regime when the siren sounds. #NeverAgain
