Record Hot Temperatures Experienced in Alaska in May

The old button from the Environmental Club days which I just happened to find on Earth Day! It is a little beat up (particularly the ends of the ribbon), but no worse for the wear, I think. And it is one of the few items that I have left from those days, so it carries a lot of great memories for me! Nothing Changes Until You Do!

During Memorial Day weekend, there was a massive heatwave in Alaska.

The temperature in Fairbanks reached 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

There is a town, Bettles, which falls within the Arctic Circle, that reached a temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit on that day.

This, while Texas was experiencing record floods, and California and much of the rest of the western portion of the United States was experiencing severe droughts.

Alaska experienced the warmest April on record, and with these temperatures, it seems likely that May will be the warmest one on record for Alaska, as well. In fact, Alaska has experienced warmer than average temperatures for months now. It follows, then, that this also happens to have been the least snowy year on record there, although on the other hand, the snow melt experienced there caused some serious flooding.

All of this happened while the American Congress acknowledged that global warming was real, but rejected the notion, by one single vote, that it was caused by human activity. In other words, we cannot do anything to change it, so let's not even bother trying, and just let the greedy oil corporations do whatever the hell they want in pursuit of more and more profits to line their pockets with.

Maybe it's time to take global warming/climate change/whatever you want to call it seriously? At what point can we acknowledge that these should serve as serious warnings?

Here is the link that got me on this topic:
