This is the kind of news that is a bit scary, conjuring images of scenes from popular movies such as Terminator and Matrix franchises, where technology has not only caught up to human beings, but surpassed them in supremacy for the world.
Oh, I know. Computers, for the time being, still only have the IQ of a 4-year-old. However, you had better believe that those IQ's will surely go up.
With all of the problems that the world is facing, this might seem far off, and too distant to worry about now. However, the time to do something about a potentially enormous problem would ideally be before it actually becomes a huge problem that spirals out of control.
Hopefully, the designers of advanced technology have some safeguards in place to keep advanced computers and robots in check permanently.
Unfortunately, however, we have seen a number of examples where things that appear to be common sense in retrospect, which seems to have been an obvious oversight in hindsight, were nonetheless overlooked in the past, and problems that seemed to be in check were allowed to just grow and grow, until they became enormous problems that were quite costly and overwhelming to fix. I submit, as an example, our economic system. Witness the near economic catastrophe of 2008, and how we as a society have collectively allowed the same people who nearly screwed us over to the point of ruining the economy seven years ago to go right back to what they were doing.
So, let us not overlook this, because it really could potentially be a catastrophe waiting just around the corner.
