There have been a lot of interesting pictures of the Eiffel Tower recently floating around on the net, since the Paris attacks. Pictures of it blacked out, pictures of it decked out in the blue, white, and red colors of the French flag, and just generally some pictures of it from visitors wanting to share their own memories of it.

But one interesting picture that I saw of it recently showed it at night, with the words Fluctuat nec mergitur written across the first level.

I had to look up what that meant, admittedly. But what I found out was that Fluctuat nec mergitur is a Latin phrase that means "Tossed but not sunk".

And so it seemed appropriate to devote a blog entry to it, as a reminder that Paris will continue on, even as the Paris attacks begin to move out of the current news and into history. The city of lights will remain strong, not allowing the brutality of terrorist attacks to defeat or define it, which is a message that I think the whole word can take comfort in and learn from.
