I was born for this Super Bowl, although still a  young child and so too young to remember any of it. Plus, I was not yet a fan of football for this one. This was the final Super Bowl played before I began to follow the NFL, and I have generally watched and followed Super Bowls almost religiously ever since.

The Raiders were still a hugely successful team when I became a fan of the NFL, although I found them intimidating at the time. It seemed like they dominated the AFC in the early 1980;s, along with the Miami Dolphins. Somehow, it seemed that those two teams were always 12-4, and always a threat to go all the way to the Super Bowl and win it, too. The Raiders had done so in 1980, and I would actually be a fan of the NFL and the Super Bowl when they would do it again in 1983, beating a powerful Washington team that entered that game as defending champions, and heavily favored after a 14-2 campaign. But the Raiders steamrolled them, much like they would do to the Eagles in this particular Super Bowl, which was overshadowed a bit by outside events, as the hostage situation was continuing, and worrying the entire nation.

Here are some of the major events that took place in 1981, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 4.529 billion people. The 52 hostages being held in Iran were released just minutes after Jimmy Carter's presidency ended. Ronald Reagan took over in the White House. Within a couple of months, he was shot and wounded by John Hinckley, who was trying to impress Jodie Foster. Pope John Paul II was shot and wounded by a gunman. Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat was assassinated by Islamic extremists during a military parade in Cairo. Israel annexed the disputed Golan Heights. In Ghana, President Hilla Limann was overthrown, and Jerry J. Rawlings took over in a coup d'etat.
