Personal memories: I worked at Steinback until January of 1995, and in the spring, began working at Fortunoff. As President of the Environmental Club at BCC (Bergen Community College), the Earth Day Festival proved very stressful but, in the end, could be deemed a success. I would meet the woman who would become my girlfriend later that year and, eventually, my wife. I started writing for the school newspaper, The Torch in the fall. Attended the New England Environmental Conference at Tufts University for the second straight year. The Knicks and Pacers renewed their intense rivalry with another series that went all the way to Game 7 at Madison Square Garden, although Indiana won it this time around. Michael Jordan came out of retirement to join the Bulls again, although they lost to the red hot Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Eventually, the Magic would reach the NBA Finals, but would fall short to the Houston Rockets, who won their second straight NBA title by sweeping Orlando. The New Jersey Devils won their first ever Stanley Cup by sweeping the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings.

Super Bowl XXIX was kind of a laugher. The Chargers had enjoyed a surprisingly successful season, and then managed to survive all the way to the Super Bowl, but were not considered a good match against San Francisco. Unfortunately, they were not up to the task of proving otherwise, as the 49ers took it to them in what was a dull, if high scoring, Super Bowl game. Still, Niners quarterback Steve Young finally ended all of the doubts that he could win the big one, as San Francisco finally bested their biggest rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, and then threw six touchdowns in the Super Bowl - still a record that stands today.

Here are some of the major events that took place in 1995, the year this Super Bowl was played. The world's population was 5.682 billion people. The United States gave Mexico a $20-billion aid program to help it along economically. The Russian space station Mir greeted first Americans. The US shuttle docks with station. There was a nerve gas attack in Tokyo subway kills eight and injures thousands. The Aum Shinrikyo ("Supreme Truth") cult is to blame. Croatia and Serbian war finally cools off. The warring parties agree on cease-fire and signed peace treaty. France exploded a nuclear device in Pacific; wide protests ensued. Israeli and Palestinian officials agreed to a transfer of the West Bank to Arabs. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot by a Jewish extremist at peace rally. In an extremely close election, Quebec narrowly rejects independence from Canada by a razor thin margin. American servicemen admit to the rape of a Japanese schoolgirl in Okinawa.
