Military Coup in Zimbabwe

There was a coup d'etat in Zimbabwe today.

President Robert Mugabe, President of this nation since 1980, when it achieved full independence from Great Britain following a civil war against whites who maintained their minority rule when the nation was still known as Rhodesia, has been placed under house arrest.

Troops are presently patrolling around the capital city of Harare.

There was fighting leading up to all of this, and Mugabe, who is 93 years old, essentially had deteriorated from a national hero into a dictator during his long tenure, was trying to make sure that the presidency would remain within his family. Many opponents were not accepting this.
