RIP, Dolores O'Riardan

Another great artist leaves us way to early!

Dolores O'Riardan, the former lead singer for the Cranberries, did suddenly and most unexpectedly yesterday. She was just 46 years old!

The Cranberries became quite big in the 1990's, known particularly for their two biggest hits, "Linger," "Dreams," and "Zombie."

I remember how "Linger" came to be a huge hit, and how it seemed so artsy and intelligent, just really smart music, to me back then. Despite my affinity to music at the time that catered to young and angry white men like myself, I had a strong appreciation and love for this song.

"Dreams" felt a bit more dreamy, and was used for an Irish tourism advertisement, which seemed fitting. In it, O'Rirdan's Irish accent bleeds through, and gives it a distinctly Irish feel to it.

"Zombie" was a bit more of a fit for the 90's, the decade of grunge and alternative music. It seems at least as relevant today than when it first came out, if not more so, frankly.

In 1999, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing the Cranberries, and am glad to have done so.

O'Riardan was a great musician and had a wonderful voice, and a strong message to go along with it. She will certainly be missed.
