2015 Seattle Seahawks Best in Franchise History?
While I am not quite ready yet to make predictions for the upcoming NFL season (will try to have them on time for opening weekend), this article (see link below) intrigued me a bit.
In it, the question is asked about whether or not this is the best Seattle Seahawks team in franchise history.
That would be a good and legitimate question, although it is a bit misleading. The Seahawks have been around since the mid-1970's, but they have only been among the elite teams in the league a few times, having made it to back-to-back Super Bowls in the previous two seasons, and only one other Super Bowl appearance before in franchise history prior (back in the 2005 season). So, we are not talking about a franchise that is as storied as, say, the Steelers or the Giants or the Packers or the Bears, with multiple championship seasons to compare with.
The thing is, Seattle does have a championship, having won the title two seasons ago. They almost won it last year, although the infamous 2nd and 1 play/decision still weighs on them.
But this is the year to try and put that behind them, finally, and win another title. If they manage to do that, they will pick up where they left off last year before losing the Super Bowl in such a heartbreaking fashion: by being everyone's favorites to be the "Team of the Decade."
Seattle is returning with most of the pieces still in place to make another run very possible. Frankly, if they manage to stay healthy, I believe that they should at least be a serious contender, and probably even the favorites to emerge out of the NFC.
Still, only two franchises in NFL history have qualified for the Super Bowl three times in a row. The Miami Dolphins were the first to do it in the 1970's, dropping the first, and then winning the last two. Then, the Buffalo Bills famously went to four straight Super Bowls, although they lost all four.
The Seahawks won the Super Bowl two seasons ago, and narrowly lost the Super Bowl last year. But as far as the upcoming season is concerned, the loss may actually bode well for them, since they at least avoid the championship hangover that falls on most champions in recent seasons. If they manage to qualify for the Super Bowl this season, they would become the first NFC team to reach three straight Super Bowls.
Indeed, all of the pieces seem to be in place for them to enjoy that level of success needed to reach the Super Bowl again.
Of course, no one can possibly know what might happen down the line. There could be key injuries, there could be unforeseen circumstances, anything.
But as of right now, heading into the upcoming season, the Seattle Seahawks look pretty much as good as anybody in the league!
