One Last Blockbuster Store Remains in the Entire World

Here is a picture of my old Blockbuster card. Yes, I still have it

Remember Blockbuster?

Those of us who were around in the late eighties and throughout the nineties, possibly even the early 2000's (don't really remember when they began disappearing) could hardly forget how this previously unknown chain suddenly took over everywhere, when physically going to a store and renting movies for the weekend or for nights off was a standard thing.

I remember how it seemed strange to me that this store got so huge, so quickly. How huge? Well, there was one year where one of the college bowl games was the "Blockbuster Bowl." I remember thinking how ridiculous that name sounded, and how it seemed to be a sign of the times. At the time, it seemed incredibly modern.

Already, it seems impossibly outdated, by way of comparison.

Before long, though, they disappeared, seemingly crawling back out of the rock from which they came to begin with.

For a while, there remained some Blockbuster stores in remote locations, including in Australia, and a couple in Alaska.

Now, however, there is exactly one Blockbuster Video store left, and it is in - of all places - Oregon!

Pretty strange, since I never really thought or Oregon as especially isolated, or anything. Kind of wonder why that particular store outlasted all of the others?

Anyway, yes, there is merely one Blockbuster left. Take a look at this link and read it. It is a blast from the past!

Even More of Trump's Version of Winning: China is Surpassing the U.S. in Science & Technology

A few years ago, the Chinese economy passed the American economy as the one that has the biggest impact in the world. Some took that to mean that the Chinese economy is bigger than the American one, although that technically is not true yet, even if it is merely a matter of time.

Now, here is more news, also inevitable, about how China is in the process of passing the United States in terms of science and developing new technologies. There are reasons for this, and I would strongly recommend taking a look at the link to the article below to explore exactly why this is happening, as well as to ask ourselves as Americans why it is happening now, in particular.

To be fair, this likely was going to happen anyway. But with Trump cutting funding to much needed scientific research, the symbolism of how it is happening now should not be lost on Americans.

Yet somehow, I have a feeling that this will be lost on those who need to listen to this the most, and that they will see in it either fake news, or some twisted and misguided notion of some evil plot to bring down America's economy, similar to some other harebrained notions that the current president keeps insisting is true.

Was Donald Trump a Gift From God? Mike Pompeo Believes That Trump Might Just Be a Biblical Savior

One of the truest signs of a fascist leader is when they try to elevate themselves into almost God-like status, when they and their supporters essentially view the leader as completely indispensable to save the country. That was the case with fascist leaders in the past, particularly in the 1930's. They basically seemed to play the role of savior of the nation, and it was felt that these leaders had been given to their country almost as a gift.

Some Evangelical Christians have virtually insinuated that Donald Trump was sent "to us" from God, and many feel that he was indeed sent to save this country.

Apparently, somebody forgot to mention to them that Trump has been loudly and proudly guilty of most of the Seven Deadly Sins, even boasting about them. He announced his presidential run in 2015 by admitting that he was "greedy, greedy, greedy," (Greed is one of the Seven Deadly Sins) and he took pride in saying that, as a star (Pride), he could grab women by the pussy (Lust). For that matter, Trump's unchecked desire for credit for everything whenever anything goes right, and his clear jealousy towards the achievement of others (particularly other politicians since he became president) and his constant attempts to undermine whatever they managed to do in the past, like trying to erase every vestige of the Obama presidency in particular) could easily be regarded as Envy, which is one of the Deadly Sins. Trump's whole life has been one of being a glutton (Gluttony is one of the Deadly Sins) for all sorts of base desires, and he continues to display this tendency towards excess right through his presidency. Trump clearly does not care to hear anything or know anything that gets in the way of his blind pursuit of still more money and more money, which can be defined as Sloth, also one of the Deadly Sins. He also claimed that he would be too busy once in the White House to play golf or take vacations, even though he has done more of each than any other president, and just appears to be extremely lazy. And let's face it, can anyone deny that Trump has a lot of rage, and would be guilty of Wrath, another of the Deadly Sins?

Seems to me that all Seven Deadly Sins are seen, and for all to witness, in this man's words and conduct.

Yet, the Evangelical Christians continue to give him a pass, time and time again. Some still feel that he is a gift from God, and not a Trojan Horse, hastening the decline of a clearly, even undeniably, troubled country.

Here is how Mike Pompeo, Trump's Secretary of State, responded when asked if Trump was specifically brought into this world to help save the Jewish people (a reference to his recent moves regarding Israel, specifically moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem last year, and then recognizing the militarily conquered Golan Heights as belonging to Israel earlier this month - both moves that he received considerable criticism for from around the world):

“Could it be that President Trump right now has been sort of raised for such a time as this, just like Queen Esther, to help save the Jewish people from the Iranian menace?” host Chris Mitchell asked Pompeo.

"As a Christian, I certainly believe that's possible." Pompeo responded.

Frankly, when it comes to Evangelical Christians and their tendency to continually excuse excess and greed and other horrible conducts that clearly go against what Jesus proclaimed in the Bible (and not just with Trump), it is hard not to remember what Shakespeare once said, about how "the devil can cite Scripture for his purpose."

Talk about the blind leading the blind!

Some Monkeys Trained to Use Money To Buy Snacks Began Buying Sex

Scientists experimented with monkeys to try and use money in order to obtain snacks. But relatively quickly, some of the monkeys began buying sex.

I think that this falls under the umbrella of "not sure what to do with this information."

Still, it is pretty fascinating!

Hundreds of Species of Amphibians Are Being Wiped Out by a Fungus

There is a fungus that is wiping out hundreds of species of frogs, toads, and salamanders, dating back to the 1980's.

In all, the species which have been wiped out constitute roughly seven percent of all amphibians.

They are trying to contain it locally, so that it does not spread.

The Trump Presidential Twitter Library

“Trump is honestly almost like a savant when it comes to tweeting.”

- Trevor and Jake Tapper discuss The Daily Show's Trump Presidential Twitter Library at SXSW.

This is a blog entry that I meant to post last week, but never quite got around to it. There were other things that I blogged about earlier in the week, and then on Friday, when I originally planned to publish this, the New Zealand mosque massacres occurred. That got me writing on that particular topic, and even if I had not written about it, it would have seemed very indifferent to publish something as lighthearted as a comical look at Donald Trump's tweets on a day when something so horrific and shocking had occurred. Yet, I was at two workplaces on that day, and it seemed that most people seemed completely unaffected, and hardly shocked at all. It seems that we Americans truly have become indifferent to mass shootings, and perhaps the fact that this shooting took place literally half the world away added to this seeming sense of indifference.

Hopefully, I am wrong. But as an American myself, having viewed the tendencies of Americans towards the news in general, and world news in particular, I am sorry to say that I do not believe myself to be wrong on this particular matter. Trust me, I wish I was, but far too many Americans are entirely indifferent about any news that occurs outside of American borders. Far too many Americans already do not believe that quality lives, and possibly wisdom, can be seen outside of the United States, or that we Americans have anything to learn from anyone else. And as far as mass shooting are concerned, we Americans clearly have become desensitized to that sort of thing. I remember when Columbine shook the world, even the United States. It seemed unthinkable at the time. It says something about our country that if that were to happen today, it might hardly qualify as more than a blip on our news radar, because truly, the shock value of mass shootings is now reserved to staggering numbers and/or shocking footage of shootings, like the one in Las Vegas a few years back. New Zealand seems to us too far away, and that is part of the problem with America.

This mindset allows Americans to continue to feel that they could, and indeed should, largely ignore what the rest of the world has to offer. And it is this mindset that gets us to elect someone who reflects this national cultural blindspot, this hubris and arrogance to assume that we are the only ones who matter or are worthy of our full attention (and even then, most Americans hardly give their full attention to any news story these days). In short, that is how we elect someone like Donald Trump. It kind of brings a rather bleak new meaning to the words, "Only in America," does it not?

Now, I am not one who runs out to buy, much less read, every political book that comes out. There are some that I have read, some that I think about, or have thought about reading, and some that I have attempted to read. However, the vast majority of political books that come out - even the big, huge ones that are supposed to be ground shaking, I mostly ignore.

Hell, following politics is depressing, I have found. Particularly if you are an American, in the late 20 century and especially now in the 21st century. It has gotten so bad, that it might be comical, if it were not tragic. I mean, seriously, at least three of the last four men to have occupied the White House have been downright comical, and the other one was more hype than substance. We went from a respected superpower with the highest standard of living by far, and a stellar reputation around the world for having helped to liberate numerous nations in Europe, Africa, and Asia during World War II, and have basically squandered all of that.

Now, we have a circus act in the White House, with far and away the biggest, least funny clown being the one who is actually in charge. And let's face it: we have tens of millions of Americans - roughly 30 percent of the country - who often show incredible immaturity in taking delight in Trump's antics. It is pathetic, and very, very depressing. What a fall from grace!

These days, our national living standards have declined sharply over the course of decades, and Trump surely is not about to fix that. Hell, he lies so much, that he cannot even be trusted to speak a word of pure truth. And with the whole world watching, that means that our reputation has plummeted along with those formerly enviable living standards. Our infrastructure is crumbling, our schools are failing, our economy is already being rivaled by China, and what economic growth may exist is built on a bubble of $22 trillion in debt for the national government, while privately, American citizens also are drowning in more debt than any other society has ever faced before. Plus, Americans have what is now a deserved reputation for ignoring or outright disbelieving science, which has clearly not added favorably to our already damaged reputation?

That is not to say that Trump is at fault for all of this, because much of this began decades ago, long before Trump ever thought of running for the White House. But since he is a grotesque figure who takes pride in his own decadence, and since he seems to personally embody all of these faults on steroids, he has come to represent the decline of this nation like no one before and, let's hope, like no one will in the future.

Indeed, Trump has been a master scam artist. He has conned people like no one in history, and it has allowed him to add to his already considerable empire of wealth and excesses, as well as tricking enough people to think that he actually was fit to serve in the capacity of the nation's highest office. One of the reasons for this, and one of the most iconic aspects of Trump's infamous time as a candidate during the 2016 election, was his insistence that the entire world was laughing at us (the United States). It was a self-fulfilling prophecy, as indeed, now, the world really is laughing with Trump in charge.

For many of us here in the United States, it is not nearly as funny.

However, we can at least turn to humor during these dark days, if only to keep a little sanity. There is a book out Trump Presidential Twitter Library, released from Trevor Noah's The Daily Show.

Although I do not intend to rush out and buy the book, it might be something that I borrow from the library or something. Because while it is political, it also is likely both funny and revealing.

Unfortunately, it is also a part of American history now.

LeBron & Lakers Miss Playoffs: Hip Hip Hooray!

Maybe it sounds petty to relish in the failure of the Lakers and LeBron's experiment, with their automatic assumption that they would have a great chance to get LeBron yet another championship ring following a departure from Cleveland.

Yes, maybe it seems petty, but I will allow myself to enjoy it nevertheless, and rub it in a bit to bandwagon fans of both LeBron and the Lakers.

You see, the Lakers are one franchise that have sickened me for a long time. Not so much the franchise itself, as their fans, and the sunny California image that they symbolize. And the clear, transparent favoritism that they continually receive, such as when former NBA Commissioner David Stern claimed that his dream NBA Finals would feature the Lakers versus the Lakers.

Clearly, all of that came into play with LeBron moving his talents to west coast, to the city of angels, to play with the team with the ugliest uniforms in the league.

Only this time, it did not work. The Lakers never really fully took off after a sluggish start. They kept struggling, and just days ago, after losing to the Nets, it became official: the Los Angeles Lakers had been eliminated from playoff contention.

There will be no ninth straight trip to the NBA Finals for LeBron, although that seemed improbable nevertheless, given his move from the weaker Eastern Conference to the much tougher Western Conference. But the fact that the Lakers did not even qualify, and that last evening, they clinched a losing record, was also an extra added bonus.

Sorry, I like Jack Nicholson and all, but this is a franchise that won five titles in the 1980's and five more again in the 2000's. They have enjoyed plenty of success, thank you. Let somebody else have a damn turn!

This year, despite the biggest star in the league donning the Lakers colors, this franchise actually let it happen, and early! By being eliminated from playoff contention, it is assured that someone other than LeBron will be in the NBA Finals, and someone else will win the NBA Finals.

And with each passing year that LeBron fails to win more championship rings, the more his legacy lags behind the real king of NBA legacies: Michael Jordan.

Some are asking the question about whether this is just a fluke kind of a season, or the new normal for LeBron? Well, I cannot say one way or the other about that.

But what I can say is that I, for one, was glad to see the Lakers, and LeBron, crash and burn for this one season. Don't get me wrong: I do not hate LeBron, although I sometimes feel that he could conduct himself in a classier manner (again, a bit more like MJ). There is always some pleasure for me in seeing a season when the playoffs begin, and the Lakers are not in it. That is a rarity, even extremely rare! And I have seen the Lakers win 10 titles, and go to the NBA Finals at least 15 times!

To put that into perspective, some people are sick and tired of the New England Patriots continually getting to and winning the Super Bowl. But I remember the Patriots being literally the worst team in the league for several years, and feeling a bit like a basket case. And they have reached the Super Bowl a total of 11 times, which is easily the most of any NFL franchise. They have won six, which ties them with the Steelers for the most of any NFL franchise. By way of comparison, I do not remember the Lakers ever having been anywhere near the worst team in the league, and the numbers of years that the Lakers have missed the playoffs have been greatly outnumbered by the times that they have made the playoffs. And since the early 1980's, when I began to follow sports, the Lakers have won those ten titles, and gone to at least 15 NBA Finals, far and away more than any other franchise during that span. And that is only in the past 40 or so years. If you look beyond that, the Lakers have won at least seven additional NBA titles along the line, and also enjoyed enormous success in the decades before all of that, as well.

This, for the second biggest city in the country one that has a sunny, glorious image, and which really does not need this. I could perhaps understand and appreciate it for a city that does not have much else going on. A place like, say...Green Bay. Or Buffalo. Or even Sacramento or Portland, cities that had only one major sports franchise until recently (Portland has since gotten an MLS club, but Sacramento has not. But Los Angeles? Really?

I used to feel that way about the San Francisco 49ers, more than the Lakers. Now, don't get me wrong: I still am no fan of the 49ers. But I remember seeing them win their fifth Super Bowl in 13 years (and in five appearances) in 1994, and wondering how I could possibly be the only guy who was sick and tired of this team. I see all of these Patriots haters, and wonder the same thing. Even the Yankees and Lakers look tame by way of comparison, and that is saying something! Surely, I cannot be the only one who is tired of seeing the Lakers and their ugly uniforms deep into the playoffs, and getting one break after another. Getting Shaquille O'Neal, for example, and then landing Kobe Bryant. Then getting Phil Jackson. Getting Pao Gasol for virtually nothing. Getting Dwight Howard, also for almost nothing. Getting LeBron James, also for almost nothing. Not all of those big name additions did the trick, but my point is: why is it always the Lakers who seem to pick up these huge names and talents for nothing? How is that possible, if not for someone in the league pulling some strings to make sure that it happens for them? The Lakers are the NBA's equivalent to our shameful corporate welfare system!

And all of those bandwagon fans that come out of the woodwork as soon as the Lakers begin the get good! Sickening! All of those fair weather fans who suddenly, loudly proclaimed how they have always loved the Lakers, and who respond, when asked (by me) if they are merely bandwagon fans, that they have been there through the good and bad, and started out liking the team when they were bad. To which I respond, when exactly was that? The Lakers have been good, even very good, for the vast majority of the time that I have followed basketball. Again, quite recently, I could count the number of times that they have missed the playoffs on one hand. Name another North American sports franchise that you can say that about?

So, at least for one spring, good riddance to bad rubbish! And it is particularly sweet to see all of those Lakers and/or LeBron fans, the ones with a false sense of entitlement, finally grow quiet and humble, if only for one spring and summer. It could not happen to a more deserving franchise!

Nancy Pelosi Still Does Not Get Why Rigging Primaries Was Wrong

Despite the devastating defeat in the 2016 election - one of many hugely crushing, humiliating and devastating losses that the Democrats have suffered in my lifetime - there are still many signs that the mainstream old guard of the party just does not get why they keep losing.

Recently, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested that she failed to "see anything inappropriate" about the way that the Democrats rigged the primaries in favor of Hillary Clinton. First, the field was cleared of any opponents, until a then relative unknown named Bernie Sanders decided to buck the trend and run for the White House as a Democrat. Then, Hillary asked the Democratic leadership for help, and got it! They tried to discredit Bernie Sanders and spread false and misleading information about him, portraying him as a candidate for angry whites, and trying to make him appear almost like a Donald Trump for the Democrats.

Next, of course, the Democrats officially nominated Hillary Clinton, even though polls suggested that she was trailing Trump.

And guess what?

She lost.

Clearly, Pelosi and many mainstream Democrats have not learned the lesson, and that is why I am beginning to seriously think that Trump will be a two-term president. Possibly more than two terms, given the way that our democracy is now quickly eroding, and the refusal of mainstream Democrats to offer a serious opposition to it all, opting instead to play it safe and be a somewhat more moderate version of what Republicans are already offering.

That is why the more things change in this country, the more they stay the same. And if you want real and meaningful change, you have to turn away from those mainstreamers!

Did You Ever Wonder Exactly How Many Roads Really Lead to Rome?

Everyone knows that saying about how all roads lead to Rome.

During my own upbringing in a suburb of Paris, it was said that there was an ancient Roman road nearby, although I have no strong memories of it. Indeed, though, these roads can still be seen and traveled, even thousands of years later.

Well, recently, I found a link showing exactly just how many roads in reality did lead to Rome, and it seemed quite fascinating. So, I thought it worth sharing. Here is the link:

RIP, Joe Flannery

Today, I wanted to post something in honor of a man who played a prominent role in the history of a legendary band: the Beatles.

Joe Flannery died earlier today. But he was a significant part of Beatles history, allowing the members of the band to sleep on his floor before they broke big.

He was good friends with Beatles manager Brian Epstein, and was helping the band in a big way from 1962-63. Sometimes, he was referred to as the "Secret Beatle."

He shared the memories of his experiences with the band in the years and decades after the Beatles attained legendary status.

95-Year-Old WWII Vet Takes Four Buses to Participate in March Against Racism

There is a 95-year-old man in New Zealand who happens to be a World War II veteran, and who took four different buses in order to stand up and protest against racism.

Indeed, in the aftermath of the mosque shootings targeting Muslims, he was so disturbed that he could not sleep well, and decided to do something about it. As much as he could, anyway.

John Sato told Radio New Zealand:

“I stayed awake quite a lot of the night and I didn’t sleep too well ever since, you know. I thought it was so sad. You can feel the suffering of other people.

“I think it is such a tragedy and, yet, it has the other side,” Sato said, referring to the terror attack. “It has put people together.

"It doesn’t matter what their race or anything. People have suddenly realized we are all one. We care for each other."

He talked about how taking the bus is much more comfortable than walking, although he received a break from both by a policeman:

“A policeman took me all the way home and waited down there until he saw me get up the stairs. He was very kind.

“That tragedy in Christchurch, ;ook what it brought out in the people.”

Once again, I feel it almost goes without saying that Americans can learn a thing or two from people of other countries. This is the appropriate response to a horrific mass shooting, being so horrified by senseless violence that you actually do something about it, and people - complete strangers, really - coming together. Somehow, though, it almost goes without saying seems to usually translate to not being all that obvious for far too many Americans, who often seem almost numbed to the shock value of massive gun violence, which is far more common in the United States than in any other peacetime, developed nation.

Trump Has Slapped His Brand On Images Of The White House To Sell At His Trump Store

Earlier today, I wrote something about an American president, Jimmy Carter, whom I truly admire, and feel represents the very best that Americans can offer. This was a World War II veteran, a former governor of Georgia, and a man who brought intelligence and honesty to his years in the White House. I went on to say:

Since leaving the White House, he has authored dozens of books, which have provided considerable wisdom and insight that Americans, and the rest of the world, can benefit from. And even more impressive, he has involved himself tirelessly in helping people out the world over. He famously spends vacations helping to build houses for poorer families, and has gone to remote regions of the world to help better living conditions, provide education, oversee fairer elections, and to negotiate for peace, sometimes placing himself in dangerous areas and situations along the way.

Indeed, I do not say it lightly when suggesting that Carter exemplifies the very best that this country has to offer.

And so it saddens me to turn my attention, once again, to the man who now occupies the White House, and who literally represents the very worst that the country has to offer. Unlike Carter, Trump dodged the draft when called upon to serve in Vietnam after receiving an elite military education and preparation to put all of that into practical use. This is a man who admitted to being, in his words, "greedy, greedy, greedy. I'm so greedy" when he announced his candidacy for the White House in 2015. A man who boasted about being a star, and thus being allowed to grab women by the pussy. This is a man who lies through his teeth, and who just looks fake every time that you look at him, with his orange skin and strange comb-over, and who proclaims to have the health and physique of a professional athlete, even as his fat gut hangs out of his golf shirts. This is a man who cannot ever admit to making any mistakes, and who tries to take credit for literally anything good, although he very quickly points the finger of blame anywhere else but him if things are bad. He proclaims himself a genius, even though he rarely shows why he thinks that in any substantive way. This is a man who is legendary for his immature, mean-spirited tweets, and who just conducts himself as an arrogant, immature, spoiled brat with a false sense of entitlement.

So much is Trump hated and ridiculed the world over, that the British flew a huge balloon portraying Trump (accurately, I might add) as a crying baby. This is a man who received worldwide condemnation for his handling (or rather, mishandling) of numerous situations since taking over, from pulling the United States out of the Paris Accords and other international agreements (the TPP and the Iran Nuclear Deal), to his seeming reluctance to call out violent white supremacists. Within hours of meeting him, numerous European leaders warned that they could no longer trust Americans as a trustworthy ally. The Pope literally looked sick after meeting Trump. And Trump was literally laughed at, to his face, in front of the entire world while talking before the United Nations about his own imaginary great accomplishments since becoming president. This is a man who tried to orchestrate his own nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize (something that Carter won legitimately, by the way), and yet, who also talks about wiping countries off the map and refers to other world leaders through ridiculous, made up names (like referring to North Korea's  Kim Jong-un as "Little Rocket Man"). This is a man who boasts to anyone who will listen about how brilliant he is, including going on and on to the Australian Prime Minister about how convincingly he won the 2016 election, even though he lost the popular vote by almost three million. Here is a man who claimed that he would do all sorts of things once in the White House, yet failed to deliver, from making Mexico pay for the wall, to defeating ISIS within  30 days, to developing an affordable national healthcare system that would cover everyone, to being too busy to play golf.

So, with all of those ridiculous contradictions already under his belt, is it really any surprise that Trump is flaunting doing something illegal? Namely, profiting from the presidency, and using his status as president in a commercial way for his business empire.

To put it into perspective, Jimmy Carter sold his peanut farm in order to eliminate any illusion of a conflict of interest while serving as president. Trump promised to divorce himself from his businesses and, like so many of his promises, broke it without apology or explanation. Now, he is using his undeserved status as president for personal and professional profit.

This man is such a ridiculous sham! A phony, a fake! It's so obvious, and yet, tens of millions of people either are too dumb or blind to see it or admit to it or, worse, pretend to be.

I will say it again: we could use a man like Jimmy Carter again!

Here is the article that got me in the topic of writing about how Trump is trying to profit from the presidency:

Jimmy Carter is Now the Oldest Living Ex-President in American History

Days ago, Jimmy Carter became the oldest living ex-president in American history, at the age of 94 years and 172 days old. He passed former President George H.W. Bush, who had previously held the record.

Deanna Congileo, a spokeswoman for the Carter Center, told CNN:

"He and Mrs. Carter take walks, and they have followed a healthy diet for a lifetime."

"Both President and Mrs. Carter are both determined to use their influence for as long as they can to make the world a better place, and millions of the world's poorest people are grateful for their resolve and heart."

The Carter Center itself released a statement:

"But we at The Carter Center sure are rooting for him and grateful for his long life of service that has benefited millions of the world's poorest people."

Indeed, Carter has truly been an inspiration. His sacrifices and examples have helped millions of people, becoming probably the most exemplary American of our modern times. This is a man who consistently remained principled, who worked hard to promote peace and fair elections and better, more sanitary conditions in literally almost every corner of the world. This is also a man who exuded success on every level in his personal life, and who does not get enough credit for what he managed during his presidency. Think about it: he was the only American president in modern times not to have been fighting a war somewhere in the world during his eight years. He achieved the first major Middle East peace breakthrough, something that was progressing for a while, especially with another major breakthrough under Clinton, but which seems to have been completely abandoned since. He orchestrated Panama regaining their Canal. And he fought for a better future for the country beyond the 1980 election, arguing that the United States needed to establish energy independence, something that has become crystal clear in the decades since, but which Americans chose to reject at the time. He also gave a major speech about the moral crisis (known as the "Malaise Speech"), and which it also has become clear in the decades since that he was spot on with. Again, though, Americans rejected him. When some Americans, especially conservatives, quickly try to reduce the Carter years as some kind of a failure, I think it should be pointed out that it might be a valid argument to suggest that Americans failed the visionary Carter, more than Carter failed the Americans who put him in the position to be their leader. They did not want to hear about limitations or even small sacrifices. This has assured that we are in a position, decades later, where we have sacrificed our good name and reputation, and have the most mediocre leadership imaginable right now.

We could use someone like Jimmy Carter again!

I, for one, feel that this is a man we can all be undeniably, unconditionally proud of! He told it like he saw it when he was President of the United States, and many - including but not limited to Israelis - viewed him as a true hero!

Carter is a true American hero, and offers the world the best of what Americans represent and offer, as opposed to the man who currently sits in the Oval Office.

The world needs more people like Jimmy Carter!

Colbert Takes Collusion Off ‘the Extensive List of Reasons Why Trump is Completely Unfit to Be President

As Donald Trump himself is quick to do, conservative supporters of President Trump have been taking the apparent conclusion of the Mueller Report that there is no clear and irrefutable evidence to conclude that either Trump himself, or anyone else, was working with Russia to help Trump get elected into the White House, and suggesting that this means that Trump is completely and totally exonerated.

After a summary of the report was made public, and given the thumbs down by Trump's own handpicked Attorney General, Trump made some statements that made clear how much he feels sorry for himself:

“It’s a shame that our country had to go through this. To be honest, it’s a shame that your president has had to go through this. This was an illegal takedown that failed. And hopefully, somebody is going to be looking at the other side.”

I sincerely and seriously do not understand how this man does the things that he does and says the things that he says, and is not so completely ashamed and embarrassed by his own conduct that he hesitates to show his face in public. Even more, though, it is a complete mystery to me how this man still has the loyal support of tens of millions of Americans, even after he continually acts like a spoiled child, time and time again. Truly, it is sickening, and as clear an indicator as we are going to get right now about the country's sharp decline.

Clearly, I am not the only one who feels this way. At the very least, this president has no shortage of critics. They span the entire world, and many outside of the United States understand only too well just what Trump represents and the decadence that he symbolizes, even if they do not understand how so many Americans can still support such a man. And even here at home, many are completely disgusted with this man and his embarrassing conduct, much like I am.

One of those who feels that this man is clearly unfit to be president is Stephen Colbert, who conceded to Trump and other conservatives that collusion with Russia could indeed be taken off the long list of reasons why Trump is unfit to be president.

Not surprisingly, conservatives were outraged that all critics of Trump were not completely and unconditionally apologetic after what they felt was complete and total exoneration of their president.

Personally, I think that Colbert's interpretation, with his extensive list of reasons to why Trump remains clearly unfit to be in the White House, was far more accurate than those who continue to defend his indefensible and inexcusable personal and completely unprofessional conduct. So, here is a video clip that seemed worth sharing:

Alabama Newspaper Editor Asks the KKK to Lynch Democrats

Another blog entry that I meant to post much earlier, but which just kind of fell into back-burner status for a while, with everything that was going on.

But while perusing through my unpublished posts earlier, I noticed this one about an Alabama newspaper editor - usually someone in a position that you might feel is in a position of responsibility - suggesting that it might be time

Yes, the editor and publisher of the Democrat-Reporter, Goodloe Sutton, wrote the Op/Ed piece last month. It is a print only newspaper, no online articles or access or anything like that. Still, it garnered the attention of students from Auburn University, who went ahead and took pictures and released them.

Basically, Sutton argued that Democrats were going to raise taxes, and called on the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) to hang them.

Once upon a time, Sutton had been a real journalist, and had received accolades from serious newspapers, including the New York Times.

Needless to say, he has completely disgraced himself, and local politicians are now calling on Sutton to resign. I do not believe that he has done so yet, but after this, he should - emphasis is should - be so widely discredited as to never have any significant influence again. And good riddance to bad rubbish, right?

Then again, this is America in 2019, and Trump is president. This is exactly the kind of story that we had not heard about for a long, long time, yet seems to have made a resurgence ever since the political rise of Trump. So, you never can tell.

The Long & Complicated History of New York Marijuana Reform

Clearly, there was disappointing news in New Jersey recently for those who advocate legalizing marijuana. Once again, the vote was delayed, and even though there is still plenty of talk about legalization "some day" or at some point in the future, it seems to remain far off and clouded in the haze of uncertainty. The close it seems to be, and the farther the goal tends to get, if that makes any sense.

This was something that I wrote about and published yesterday, and felt a bit disheartened over.

Still, since the topic is there, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the history of marijuana in another state pushing for marijuana legalization, and a state that is quite close to New Jersey, to boot.

Yes, the Empire State (New York, in case you still did not get the reference) has been tossing and turning regarding this issue, as well. Like with our own New Jersey governor, Governor Cuomo also has been strongly advocating for legalization for a long time as well. He wants it legalized across the state, although like in New Jersey, he has been experiencing some challenges, some bumps in the road, if you will.

New York in particular has had a bit of a strange history with marijuana and efforts to legalize the completely natural plant.

This was an article that I meant to share here for quite some time (notice that this is from May of 2014, which was just shy of five years ago!). But this seemed like a very ideal, apropos time to finally go ahead and do this.

⚽️ World Cup Champions France Blow Out Iceland, 4-0 ⚽️

🏆🇫🇷  On est les Champions ! 🏆🇫🇷

France obviously impressed many people by winning the World Cup last year. But this was easily their most convincing win since taking that world championship last summer.

It took a while for France to score again after that, until Olivier Giroud got the second goal in the 68th minute. In the process, he became France's third highest goalscorer of all time. Suddenly, France was ahead, 2-0.

Yet, they were not through.

Kylian Mbappé added a third goal ten minutes later from a pass by Antoine Griezmann, to make it 3-0.

Griezmann got the fourth and final goal in the 84th minute, providing France with the oh, so comfortable 4-0 margin of victory.

Often times, France has not played consistently. They hardly looked the part of world champions in the matches that the team played following their World Cup championship run last summer. But they definitely looked the part last night!

Marijuana Legislation Stalls in New Jersey...Yes, Again

This falls into the category of annoying news (to me) rather than tragic, or anything.

The effort by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to legalize marijuana in the Garden State was set for a vote yesterday. But the vote was delayed, because they did not have quite enough votes to pass it.

And so, yet again, the effort stalled. This, despite the support for legalization from the governor, from the state legislature, and over 60 percent of New Jersey residents.

Apparently, there is a generational gap, as older Democrats still have strong reservations against marijuana. Also, there was not enough time to sway them, or Republicans to join in the effort. And so it is put off, once again.

This is frustrating, for those of us who advocate legalization, and see it as ridiculous that the completely natural plant should have been made illegal and criminalized in the first place, historically speaking.

Let us hope that change in this regard comes sooner rather than later.

RIP, Jeremy Richman, Father Of Sandy Hook Shooting Victim

More sad news regarding the death by suicide of someone related to a mass school shooting.

The father of one of the Sandy Hook shooting victims killed himself very recently.

Newtown Police found the body of 49-year-old Jeremy Richman near his office in Newtown, Connecticut, the town where the shooting took place.

"This is a heartbreaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole; the police department's prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time," said Lt. Aaron Bahamonde.

Richman had obviously struggled with the sudden, shocking loss of his first child in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings. Yet, he did not merely stand idly by, but took a very active role in trying to make sure future tragedies like that would not happen again. As Tovia Smith of NPR reports:

Just months after the death of Avielle, then their only child, Richman and his wife, Jennifer Hensel, co-founded the Avielle Foundation to support neuroscience research to shed light on "what leads someone to engage in harmful behavior" with the hope of "bridging biochemical and behavioral sciences," according to the foundation. Richman's dream was "a paradigm shift in the way society views the health of the brain." As he explained to NPR in 2017, he wanted people to see the brain as "just another organ that can be healthy or unhealthy, just like heart disease, or cancer or diabetes."

"Just like resources were poured into landing a man on the moon and exploring outer space," Richman said, "we need to invest in exploring our inner space."

RIP, Jeremy Richman.

Beckham Leaves Giants for Greener Pastures in Cleveland, & Good Riddance!

Meant to publish this some time ago, but then came other things, more serious things, that occupied my time, and it seemed a bit disrespectful to publish it with so much else then happening. In fact, I was starting to fear that I might never publish this. But it was not all that long ago, and is still being debated by Giants fans here in the Tri-State area, so I will go ahead and post this now.

It is official: Odell Beckham will be leaving the Giants, and joining his new club, the Cleveland Browns, who feel more and more like a truly up and coming young ball club. I heard someone even suggest that the Browns will win the AFC North. That seems maybe  bit premature, although frankly, I would love to see that. But they will not have an easy time of it.

Meanwhile, it looks like it might be another long year for the Giants. Coming off two straight seasons where they had a combined total of eight wins, the prospects for the upcoming season do not appear great at this moment. In fact, the Giants look like they will have yet another highly forgettable, and perhaps regrettable, season.

Many are suggesting that this was a very bad move for the Giants, that they got rid of one of the most talented players in the league, and possibly one of the best wide receivers in history.

However, I do not agree. In fact, I think that the Giants should likely benefit by doing what they did. Yet, most people seem to feel that this was a huge mistake for the G-Men.

Maybe. But here's the question that I had, as a Giants fan: how much better did he make his team?

While Beckham was racking up some admittedly impressive numbers, and received attention on sports highlight reels during his time with the team. Admittedly, I took pleasure in some of those exciting moments, and marveled at his talents. My own personal favorite moment was that one-handed touchdown grab a few years ago against the Dallas Cowboys. That still ranks as one of the most amazing catches that I have ever seen in any football game.

Now, of course, Beckham is a former Giant. He was traded to the Cleveland Browns for a couple of high draft picks.

Yet, as a Giants fan, I feel almost a sense of relief, even though Beckham was, admittedly, undeniably enormously talented.

Why?

Frankly, he was a selfish, immature player. Again, the question is how much better did he make the Giants? Did they improve with him as a member of the team?

If you look at the last two seasons, the answer is a resounding no. The Giants finished 2017 with a 3-13 record, the worst since I became a fan in 1981. They followed that up with a 5-11 mark last season. Beckham was injury plagued for much of that time, but when he was not, he was a distraction. He could indeed be a hero on the field, but he lacked leadership and any sense of responsibility off of it, from what I saw.

The fact of the matter is that Beckham had become an enormous headache and distraction, one that the Giants needed to move beyond. This was their chance to do so, and they took it. As a Giants fan, I am glad, because Beckham showed no indications that he was about to improve and suddenly become a selfless player, or help the Giants become a truly better team.

Maybe the Giants could have used him better, as some are suggesting. But Beckham reminds me of other troubled, and troubling, wide receivers. Terrell Owens, often known simply as "T.O." Skip Bayless used to suggest that this was not merely his initials, but stood for "Team Obliterator." And when you saw his antics, and how his actions and behavior in the end hurt the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Dallas Cowboys, you have to come to the conclusion that it was not the fault of each one of those teams. The common denominator in all of those situations was Owens, who never seemed to be happy, and who made his feelings known, even if it did serious, even irreparable, harm to his teams.

The same can be said of Antonio Brown. I am not a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, so I am not exactly mourning their bad luck with him, like I did not mourn the bad luck of San Francisco with Owens. However, all of the nonsense with his antics, which revolved around his enormous ego, did that team no good. They should have been a legitimate Super Bowl contender, yet they consistently underachieved, particularly in the last two seasons. They lost to a Jacksonville team that they frankly should have beaten in the playoffs following the 2017 season, and then they missed the playoffs outright last season. Brown was not helpful either time, and it felt like Pittsburgh should have been able to go farther, even possibly much farther, both seasons.

As for the Giants, they were not even close to the level of play as the teams that Owens and Brown played for. Owens played for a playoff team in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Dallas, at least before things went bad. Hell, the Eagles and arguably the Cowboys were serious title contenders. And Brown was on a serious title contender in Pittsburgh. In each situation, everything went bad, and the high-profile unhappiness of these two players always seemed to be at the center of everything.

That is why I am not mourning Beckham's departure. Frankly, I almost wanted it to happen sooner, truth be told.

Maybe he will make Cleveland better. It seems that the fans there are happy that Beckham joined their team, and good for them. I am glad that they are happy, and would actually rather appreciate seeing the Browns become good again. Three decades have passed since the last time that the Browns reached the AFC title game, and they have never been to the Super Bowl in franchise history. So, they are overdue for some serious success, and let me be honest: if Beckham helps them get there, then I will be happy for them.

However, he was not helping the Giants much. I mean it! Yes, he had some spectacular highlight reel  plays, and he sold a lot of jerseys. Probably put a lot of butts in seats, for that matter. But again, the Giants were 3-13 in 2017, and they followed that up with a 5-11 season last year. Is all of that Beckham's fault? No, of course not. But his immaturity was rubbing off on other players, and he lacked leadership qualities and, I feel, was not a responsible team player. He was more of a distraction than anything else, and so he was hurting the team more than helping, adding fuel to the fire with all of the problems that the franchise was facing. Those two seasons were the worst two consecutive seasons that I saw the Giants have, and I have been a fan of their since the 1981 season.

So, my belief is that they will be better off without him, and Cleveland just might be better off with him. In that sense, it might be a win-win. But the Giants definitely needed to do something, and Beckham needed a reminder that teams come first, that he is not so indispensable that anything goes. There are limits to things, and his immaturity had just gone too far. He had been given too much of a free pass for too long. He needs to find a way to keep his ego in check, and maybe being booted out of the biggest market in the NFL might help him recognize that.

Again, nothing against Beckham personally. I wish him every success in Cleveland, and really hope that he helps get that team back into the playoffs. And hopefully, the Giants will do something truly special with their draft choices, and begin to build a playoff contending team themselves in the near future! Hopefully, everyone gets something out of this trade.

Sunday Hiking With My Son on a Beautiful Spring Afternoon

There has been a lot of negative news lately, it seems. The mass shootings in New Zealand. The attacks on a village in western Africa over the weekend, and the devastation of a cyclone in southeastern Africa. News that Israel, which just got official recognition from the United States that the Golan Heights is part of that country's territory despite it having gained that through armed conflict, has shelled a school where Palestinian children were sleeping. And, of course, Donald Trump is still the president, which is depressing and sometimes tragic news in it's own right, given the spike in hatred and violence which he actively fosters.

Sometimes, you need a break from all of that.

I have been working some long hours in recent weeks, between two jobs. It has been tiring,

This weekend offered some chances for me to both relax, and catch up on some things that I have been meaning, and needing, to catch up on. Some cleaning, for example. Transporting some things from one place to another. And, of course, spending time with my son, something that the working hours have not offered as much of as I would have preferred.

So, I wanted to shift gears a little bit, and focus a bit more on some positives, instead of merely dwelling on the negatives.

Yesterday, I took advantage of the beautiful, warm spring day by going on a hike with my son. It is a wonderful time of the year, one of my favorites, when the cold of the winter yields to the warmer, milder days of the spring. We had quite a bit of rain recently, but this added to the water pouring down the waterfall that we went to. It was very nice!

We have not gone hiking much lately.  We were both busy with moving earlier this year, and I took a couple of trips to help my parents move in upstate New York. The weather was not always accommodating.

But everything finally fell into place yesterday, and we went hiking. It was great! My son, as usual, seemed a bit hesitant (though not too strongly resistant), and then seem to have a blast once we actually we out there in the woods, picking up sticks and rocks and throwing them against trees and as far as he could out into the woods, climbing onto rock outcroppings, and just enjoying the wilderness a bit.

Personally, I just relished in the relative peace and quiet. That is one thing that the wilderness offers us, our reconnecting into the real world, as I like to put it. Many people feel that this is not the case, that the wilderness is an escape from what they consider the real world. Personally, I feel that this version of the "real world" is ridden with the fake quality of our modern lives, all of the excesses and illusions, to say nothing of the imperfections. But in the wilderness, we escape that, we take a literal breath of fresh air, and we feel restored. That is how I felt, and it seemed like a good idea to share that experience, to the extent possible, anyway, here on this blog.

So, here are some pictures:

Another Parkland Shooting Survivor Commits Suicide

Very tragic news to report, as a second Parkland school shooting survivor has taken his own life. It is the second survivor of the shooting to commit suicide in a span of less than a week, leaving many to speculate about the longer term impact of surviving the horrors of such a shooting.

A male sophomore student who was at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during last year's mass shooting took his own life on Saturday evening.

It cannot be confirmed whether the mass shooting was linked to his suicide or not, and police have not released his name.

Still, the reaction and calls for action are starting to grow louder:

“Now is the time for the Florida Legislature to help,” said Jared Moskowitz, Florida’s emergency management director and a former state representative from Parkland.

“Mental health is a bipartisan issue,” he posted on Twitter.

Trump Both Tacitly and Actively Encourages Violent Thought & Behavior By Supporters, Part Two

Earlier today, I posted a blog entry about how President Trump indirectly advocates violence. The gist of my argument was that he pushes the envelope just far enough to get his supporters up in arms and angry, but he himself cannot (yet) be pinned down for any specific acts of violence.

Still, there have been numerous acts that seem to have been largely done with him in mind. The man who sent bombs to reporters at CNN who were critical of Trump, Cesar Seyek Jr., did it because he was a big supporter of Trump and MAGA. The man who just killed 50 people in the mosque attacks in New Zealand. And there was the BBC reporter who was attacked at a Trump rally. Trump's name seems to be right in the middle of all of this, yet he can always shrug and say that he did nothing wrong, and get away with it. Remember, this man claimed that he could shoot someone on a crowded city street, and his supporters would not budge an inch in their support of him, and he is probably right.

Yet, for many of us, the fact that he or his propaganda so often seems to be indirectly involved in these kinds of outbreaks of violence is troubling.

How does he keep finding himself in such positions?

That one's easy! He does it deliberately. He continually hints at violence if people do not support him, suggesting that his group of people are tougher. He talks about his "second amendment people," as if a simple command on his part will unleash a wave of violence in his name. And he does this repeatedly, to the point that it hardly takes a scholar to figure out what he is trying to do: intimidate dissenters, and get his fanatical supporters up in arms, literally.

As if further proof were needed, here is a link to an article that shows, statistically, how violence has spiked dramatically in counties where Trump has held one of his pathetic rallies.

We really need to understand what it is this guy does, and how specifically he poses a threat to relative peace and stability in the United States today.
