Emily Murphy dragged her feet for as long as she could, refusing to acknowledge Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election. She received a lot of criticism for this action, as well, to the point that she had to go out of her way to try and make clear that this was not because of pressure from the Trump White House.
But yesterday, she finally acknowledged what has been quite clear to almost everyone except the most die-hard Trump loyalists: that Joe Biden won the election, and that there is no real serious case to be made that Trump has a path to the White House, as Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, keeps insisting.
Murphy sent a letter yesterday formally inviting the Biden team to officially begin the transition process. Again, Murphy seemed to go out of her way to defend herself against charges of dragging her feet in this process, or favoring Trump. Here is a snippet of what she included in her letter:
For his part, President-elect Biden did not wait for Murphy’s formal acknowledgement, and started to assemble his cabinet in recent weeks. But the formal acknowledgement allows the Biden team to access space inside of government agencies in preparation for his officially becoming the president in January.
Trump thanked Murphy and the GSA in a couple of tweets, and said that while he and his team will continue to fight the election results, Murphy had done what needed to be done under the circumstances, and that it was what was best for the country. This was a move that some Trump advisors suggested was tantamount to a concession.
Many Democrats remained angry after the letter. They demanded that Murphy provide an explanation for how she finally came to her decision. Finally, though, it appears that the transition of power is finally, officially underway.
Let it be so.
