MNF: San Francisco 31, LA Rams 10
In the preview for this NFL week that I posted last week, it was mentioned that San Francisco had won the previous four meetings between the two teams.
Well, make that five in a row now.
The Rams added a threat on offense with wide receiver Odell Beckham, which may still end up benefiting quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Rams offense. However, there was no real evidence of it last night, based on how the Rams performed. Or rather, how they did not perform might be the more accurate way of putting it.
San Francisco held onto the ball for over 39 minutes and earned 335 yards and 20 first downs, to just 278 yards and 16 first downs for the Rams. The Niners took advantage of poor play by Los Angeles, including two INT's, to go up 14-0 in the first quarter. The Rams scored their only touchdown of the game in the second to seem to answer, but SF scored another touchdown late in the first half to go back up by two scores, and it was all 49ers from there.
Stafford threw those two interceptions in the first quarter, and was very lucky that an apparent INT in the fourth did not count against him. In all, he completed 26 of 41 passes for 243 yards, with one touchdown and those two INT's, which kind of set the tempo for the game. His favorite target was Cooper Kupp, who caught 11 passes for 122 yards. Darrell Henderson was not especially effective on the ground, picking up 31 yards on five carries.
Jimmy Garoppolo enjoyed a solid night, completing 15 of 19 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Deebo Samuel was his favorite target, as he caught five passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Elijah Mitchell picked up 91 yards on 27 carries.
For the Rams, this was the first time all season that they lost two straight games. It drops them to 7-3 on the year, and was a missed opportunity, as they had a chance to tie the Cardinals for first place in the division had they managed to win. Now, Los Angeles will head into the bye week looking to lick their wounds after these two straight losses.
San Francisco, meanwhile, wins their first home game in over a year, as hard as that is to believe. They improve to 4-5 on the season, and keep their playoff hopes intact.
My pick: Accurate
