Baltimore (6-2) at Miami (2-7)
The Dolphins finally got their first win in nearly two months last weekend. But that was against the Houston Texans, who sure seem to be one of the very worst teams in the league. Only one team, the Detroit Lions, have an even worse record than the Texans do.
So now, the Fins would love to earn their second win in a row. They have home field advantage, and they also have a prime time game, the only one being played on this night, and for several days thereafter. If they win, it will make some big news, and they can enjoy a long period to prepare for the next one, and maybe get on a roll.
Here's the problem, though: they are facing the Baltimore Ravens, who are one of the best and hottest teams in the league. Yes, Baltimore right now sports a record of 6-2, which makes them tied with the Tennessee Titans for the best record in the AFC. They have a decent defense, and a good, solid offense. Not the most explosive offense in the league, but with Lamar Jackson, there is nevertheless an element of unpredictability and explosiveness about them. The Ravens kind of remind me just a little bit of the Philadelphia Eagles back in the late 80's and early nineties, with a tough defense and a potentially explosive offense led by a dynamic and incredibly athletic quarterback.
All of that feels like it might be a little too much for the Dolphins, who will have a difficult time trying to contain that Ravens offense. After all, the Fins have a defense that ranks near the bottom of the league. And their offense is not the kind of offense that has shown much in the way of ability to score a lot of points, should Baltimore get hot and light up the scoreboard.
Whether this game features a decent amount of offense, or turns into a defensive struggle, it seems to me that the Ravens are the better team. Frankly, the much better team. Unless they have a major letdown or seriously overlook the Dolphins, they should find a way to win this game.
My pick: Baltimore
