Indianapolis Colts 45, NY Jets 30
The Colts came out on fire in the first half. The offense had four drives to work with, and they scored four touchdowns on those drives. No turnovers and no penalties. At the end of each of those drives, they came away with 7 points. It does not get much better than that for any team.
For their part, the Jets tried to keep up. Unfortunately, they just have not had the kind of offense that can even come close to keeping up in the event of a shootout, which is what would have been required of them in this game.
By halftime, the Colts led 28-10, and had the game pretty well in hand. With barely nine minutes played in the second half, Indy had already expanded that lead to 42-10. The Jets defense was simply not up to the task of stopping, or even slowing the momentum, of the Colts offense in this night.
Indianapolis has had it's share of problems this season. They began the season 0-3, much like the Jets, even though they are generally regarded as a much better team. They recovered to win three of their next four, and looked like they were gaining momentum and making a push to be a contender. But then they suffered a devastating loss to the Titans.
There were questions regarding how the Colts would look just four days after such a brutal defeat. Well, they answered that in very convincing fashion. They looked absolutely terrific, and their offense loomed quite prolific, taking apart the Gang Green offense with clinical precision.
One side note: the Jets had an unusual uniform combination in the game last night. They wore their green helmet and white away jerseys, of course. But they also donned their black pants, which is the first time that I have seen them do that without their black jerseys. Personally, I prefer the green pants. Green is a fairly unique color in the NFL, and the Jets are the only team with truly green helmets, since the Eagles have a bizarre shade of very dark green. The Jets look sharpest (to me) when they take advantage of that. Black is far too common in NFL uniforms. In fact, it is quite overdone by now in the uniforms of many sports clubs in all the major sports, at least in North America. Let them stick with green, for their jerseys and their pants. It helps them stand out much more and gives them a more unique and distinctive look.
So the Colts looked good, and may indeed still prove to be a legitimate playoff contender this season. Certainly, if they keep playing the way that they did last night, they will be a contender. They improve to 4-5 on the season. Meanwhile, the Jets could not put together a second straight good game. Just days after pulling off a big upset win over the Bengals, they really looked horrible, for the most part, against the Colts. It felt like the Colts took this game by the throat in the first half, and never let go. Never looked back, for that matter. The Jets offense looked like the biggest problem in the beginning of the season, but it is their defense that looks especially suspect right now. They had allowed 88 combined points in their previous two games heading into this one, and needed to tighten things up. Clearly, they did not, as the Colts scored 45 points.
Nor did their offense really step up in any significant way. They had their moments, and they did gain yards and score points. Mostly, though, the bulk of this came later in the second half, when the game was well out of hand. Indianapolis was winning, 42-10, before the Jets seemed to tighten up on both defense and offense. That is a classic case of too little, too later, and it was nowhere near enough for them to even make it remotely competitive in the second half. And that, my friends, is why they are 2-7.
My pick: Accurate
