The first game of this NFL season which is now basically upon us is unusually appealing, because it feels like this one has a real chance of being a bona fide Super Bowl preview. It features the defending Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams, hosting the Buffalo Bills, who are the de facto favorites for many, many people this season to go all the way.
Of course, it would help both teams to start off the right way, which is to say, with a win. The Rams hope that this will kick off a successful Super Bowl title defense, while the Bills hope that this game ends with a win that will provide them with the momentum to follow up on their tremendous promise and not only reach the Super Bowl.
So already, despite this not only being the first game of the season for both teams and, indeed, the first game of this entire season, there is a lot at stake. Two very solid quality teams going toe to toe. The defending Super Bowl champions, who outright declared that they intended to repeat with another championship this season, versus the Buffalo Bills, the team that many people favor to take their first ever Super Bowl title in franchise history.
Yeah, the stakes are pretty big.
Now it should be pointed out that since taking over as head coach, Sean McVay has won all five of his season openers to this point. He knows how to prepare his team for that opening game. He studies his opponents, and will have his team ready. That, plus home field advantage, as well as the momentum from having just won the Super Bowl, should help push the Rams to get past Buffalo in this one.
That is not to say that the Bills will not bounce back. Indeed, in my season prediction, which was published just yesterday, Buffalo was my pick to take the title. Overall, I believe that they are the better of these two teams. In fact, I think that the Bills are the best overall team in the NFL this season. But that does not mean that the Bills will win every single game this season. They will lose on occasion. Every NFL team in history save one during the Super Bowl era has lost at least one game.
I am picking the home team, but this does not alter Buffalo as my pick to win it all this year. Perhaps losing their first game may just be what they need. But such a tough test, right off the bat this season, will prove to be a bit much for them on this night.
One way or the other, this should be a terrific and entertaining game. So enjoy!
My pick: LA Rams
