Grey Cup Preview:
Toronto Argonauts versus Winnipeg Blue Bombers
The Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers are going to meet in this year's Grey Cup. It will be a rematch of the Grey Cup meeting two years ago between these two teams, which Toronto ultimately wound up winning.
Of course, that was then, and this is now. Things obviously are different now.
Toronto looked like the clear cut favorites last year entering the playoffs. But they were stunned by the Alouettes, who handed them a home loss right in the East Division Finals. However, the Argos exacted a measure of revenge following a season when they did not always look particularly remarkable. But in this year's Division Final on the road, they got the better of the Alouettes, and in the process, qualified for this Grey Cup.
Following a disastrous start to the season, Winnipeg has won 10 of their last 11 games. They have scored at least 25 points or more in all but two games during that stretch. That said, it should be noted that one of those games where they failed to reach that milestone came against the Argos. Still, it seems likely that we can expect to see them score some points in the Grey Cup this Sunday.
The Argos can hold on to some hope, since the one loss that the Blue Bombers did suffer came against them back in September. The Argonauts managed to defeat the Blue Bombers on the road in Winnipeg. In fact, both of the last times that Winnipeg lost, it came against the Argos. You would think should bode well with them for this meeting. However, keep in mind that those two meeting were with quarterback Chad Kelly in the lineup. But Kelly will not be with Toronto in this one, due to the serious leg injury that he sustained last week in the Eastern Division Final. In fact, he will not even be on the sidelines. Also, the first of those meetings came before the Blue Bombers had their massive turnaround.
Really, that is the key point to take away from all of this. The Blue Bombers got off to a stunning 0-4 start, and were still only 2-6, and looking quite bad, before they completely turned things around. Since that point, however, Winnipeg has emerged as clearly the best team in the CFL. They have just had such an impressive turnaround following that disastrous start, that they feel like the team of destiny. Toronto has their work cut out for them, and the loss of Kelly at quarterback really just feels like an omen. That is why they are my pick to win this one and emerge, once again, as the CFL champions.
My pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers
