This video by British comedian Jonathan Pie really makes a lot of sense.
Ultimately, the Democrats should have run on ideas, and not just on the one irrefutable fact that Kamala Harris is not Donald Trump. It was enough for many people - myself included, admittedly - but not enough apparently for the majority of American voters.
Apparently, not enough people felt that the threat was real. It seemed to me, also, that when people kept pounding and pounding the same points - like comparing Trump to Hitler, or that he as a dictator, or a racist, or a misogynist, and on and on - it fell on largely deaf ears.
Perhaps it was like the first Trump presidency, where he said and did so much shocking and appalling stuff that it simply lost the shock value after awhile. It seems that Trump was even more unhinged than ever. Yet his support was stronger than ever. Celebrities came out for him, like Elon Musk and Hulk Hogan and Dr. Phil. And ultimately, the majority of voters came out for him, as well.
Everyone keeps asking the same question, and it's a good one: How did we get here?
Now I have my theories on the long term, because I feel that Trump is more of a symptom than the actual problem in this country. Theoretically, if Trump somehow disappeared tomorrow, the problems that we saw lead up to these election results will very much remain, and continue to divide.
In the short term, however, the Democrats surely could have run a better, far more effective campaign. I had thought that she had done a decent job, particularly with how she seemed to get the best of him in the debate. But then again, I was already convinced that she was the obvious candidate, precisely because she was not Donald Trump.
Yet in the end, people apparently felt that they did not know enough about Kamala Harris. And it was not enough that they did know plenty about Trump, because what they knew apparently was not enough to dissuade them from putting him in the Oval Office again.
Sigh.
So here we go. Another four years. It's exhausting even to think about.
In this video, Jonathan Pie diagnoses the reasons why the Democrats lost yet again, and how they allowed Donald Trump to get the better of them yet again. Frankly, he makes some very valid points. Overall, what he says makes sense.
