Robert Reich has been one of the most reasonable voices out there in these times of political insanity in the United States.
Recently, he posted this in Facebook, which is how I feel about everything that is going on.
For all intents and purposes, Reich is suggesting that Trump and his GOP are trying to turn back the clock to a time when robber barons lorded over the rest of us. A time before unions won important battles which gave us things like the 40-hour work week, paid overtime, weekends off, health benefits, retirement, vacation time, and many other things which, frankly, we seem to have taken for granted.
Now, we might need to realize that these oligarchs in control are not the friend of everyday Americans. That they just want more and more money and benefits for themselves, at the expense of the rest of us.
Personally, I believe that they are doing their best to take us back to a new, modern form of feudalism, or serfdom. So many of us are drowning in debt that we have to hold two or three or four jobs down, just to stay afloat. And that leaves little town to get active in politics, or even to muster the energy to pay much attention to what's going on.
That's at least part of the reason why it feels like this country is going in such a disastrous direction.
Apparently, we are determined to relearn the hard way what past generations of Americans understood. And Reich is right: we will need a new progressive movement to lift us out of this.
He urges us to remember that we outnumber them. Greatly, at that.
