What's going on in Texas right now is not new. It's also indicative of a deliberate political strategy by GOP politicians on the state level to try and monopolize the power of the GOP on the national level.
For all intents and purposes, Republican lawmakers in Texas have been attempting a redistricting plan that would give them 80% representation in the state on a Congressional level, even though they have about 56% support statewide. Obviously, that is disproportionate representation, which is, of course, their whole point.
It is a plan which is carried out on the state level but which has a much broader impact when taken on the national level, because this is not just happening in Texas. Precisely because so many states are trying to pass redistricting measures to assure their party's future success (for the foreseeable future, in any case), it has a massive impact on the national political scene, as well.
And it always seems like the Republicans are ahead of the game, with Democrats and other opponents to these measures being forced into the defensive, to try and oppose these measures, and sometimes trying to respond. We see Democrats in California and New York now just beginning to think about doing that in their own states, except in favor of the Democrats.
All of this feels like it is leading to still more polarization, and possibly militant opposition in time, as well. In short, it feels like the wrong direction for our country to take. By now, of course, the United States heading in the wrong direction politically really is nothing new.
Let's also remember that all of this has been going on for some time now. But under Trump, it seems like it is speeding up and growing far more serious than ever before.
Do we really want this to be a democracy in name only? Do we really want representation to be chosen by the elected, and not by those who elect those who are supposed to represent all of us? Because that is the direction which we seem to be heading in, unless we find a way to put a stop to it.
Take a look at Leeja Miller's video below. She is informative and breaks it down, including the specific dangers and how this threatens what still remains of our American democracy. Again, this feels increasingly like an existential threat to that democracy.
The Republican Plan To End Elections
