"If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed.......and we will deserve it."
Lindsey Graham Tweet on May 3, 2016
“Trump 2028. I hope this never ends,”
Lindsey Graham, 2025
This is something which I have been warning about for a long time now. Nor was I alone, since others warned about it, as well. But for a long time, I have warned that Donald Trump would never go away. That he would run for a third term, a fourth term, and so on. That he was not joking all of those years ago when he suggested that the United States should look into having a "president for life" in the way that China does.
Some people waved it off dismissively. Some people refused to believe it, said that there were term limits, and so on, much like many of the same people felt that Trump's political career ended once he lost the 2020 election.
Now, I sure hope that I am wrong, and that they are right. Much like I hoped that his losing the 2020 election - and he did lose, and convincingly at that - spelled the end for Trump.
The thing is, I did not believe it then. Much as I wanted to, I looked first at the man's enormous ego and staggering sense of entitlement. The fact that he held a political rally days into the Biden administration, and that the pandemic shutdown was bound to end with soaring inflation, and that most of the country had too short of an attention span to actually pay attention to the actual reasons for it. Put two and two together, and it felt like Trump would inevitably be the 2024 candidate on the GOP side, and would likely win it. Then, he would likely manipulate people's sentiments and anger at inflation and other issues to capture a second term.
And I'm telling you that now, with the GOP holding power in key electoral college battleground states, Trump - and not some other Republican - will run again and win in 2028.
Once again, I hope to hell that I'm wrong.
But I don't think so.
Here's the latest sign: Lindsey Graham just gave a ringing endorsement for the idea.
While on FOX News with Sean Hannity earlier this week, Graham said, “Trump 2028. I hope this never ends."
The same Senator Graham who once relentlessly criticized Trump leading up to the 2016 election. The same Graham who has suggested in the past that Trump is unfit for office. The same Graham who blasted Trump after January 6th.
Yeah, that same Lindsey Graham is now wildly enthusiastic about extending the Trump years in the White House well into the next decade, at least.
Sickening, yes.
However, we need to recognize that this is what we are facing. I don't say it lightly when I refer to MAGA as a cult, or him as a de facto dictator. It's better to understand this and face the harsh reality than to keep deluding ourselves that there will be some quick and magical end to this. I never believed it when people kept insisting that he would be behind bars, and I don't believe all of those people who now are claiming that his health is so bad that he will not make it past the next few months, or has one year to live, or so.
He will be there in 2028, and will run again.
Most likely, he will win. Not sure if it will be fair or not, but that's what I expect the official result to be.
Unless that stubborn 40 to 45 percent suddenly dwindles quickly, inexplicably, he likely will win the election. Don't count on "undecideds" to pull us out of this muck. Don't count on people suddenly recognizing how disastrous his presidency has been and generally is. They haven't recognized it for the last decade. And despite the disasters of this second term, he still maintains the same level of support, more or less, as always. Don't expect that to change, regardless of headlines regarding poll numbers which suggest otherwise.
Trust me, I hope that I am wrong.
But I doubt it.
As I have also been saying for a long, long time now, I suspect that things will get far worse in this country before they get better. And things just aren't bad enough in this country - yet - for people to finally wake up.
Below are the links to the new articles from which I obtained much of the information, as well as the specific quote from Graham about Trump running again in 2028:
