Miami (0-2) at Jacksonville (1-1) – When I saw that this was going to be the match-up this week, it made me feel a bit strange. These are two teams that you usually do not hear or see much from, because neither is particularly great. So maybe it is good that we get a chance to see them, because otherwise, we just would not see them at all. However, admittedly, I just did not find this game particularly enticing. Last Thursday, we saw the Browns and the Bengals, the two Ohio teams, battling it out. But at least I like those two teams, particularly the Browns, and it would be nice to see them succeed. This game between two Florida teams that are not even in the same division feels a bit forced. Maybe we should be interested in what happens, and what the ramifications are. It seems doubtful that either of these teams will be in the playoffs. Even if one of them makes it (I would be willing to bet almost anything that there is no chance that both of them qualify), they likely will not go anywhere. Still, this is the match-up. Admittedly, I have only limited interest, though. The Dolphins are awful right now at 0-2, and having lost their first two games. Both were good teams, so there is that. But the Jaguars have been surprisingly good, as well, and again, the Fins are the road team, which makes this one extra hard. Miami should be able to put a good showing and keep it fairly close for a while, but in the end, the Jaguars appear better and hotter, and should be able to win this one. My prediction: Jax

⚽️ PSG Rebounds From Bad Start to New Season ⚽️

 Paris Saint-Germain - Nice ( 3-0 ) 

PSG, the favorites to win another Ligue 1 championship this season, did not get off to a very good start for the new season. They lost their opener at home to Lens, 1-0, and then followed that up with a 1-0 loss in Marseille.              

An 0-0-2 start, which is obviously not good.              

However, they are a talented team, and few people would expect them to simply stay bad for very long. And so they bounced back in the past few days, beating Metz, 1-0, on the road, and then blowing out Nice, 3-0, back in Paris.              

They are back to even on the season, and should hopefully get things straight again as the year goes along.

Wow! What a week in the NFL, huh? 

Some really good games. That includes a big showdown between the Patriots and the Seahawks, who met in the Super Bowl just a few years ago (second and one, remember?). That wound up being a very memorable contest, just like almost every game when these two teams meet. In the end, the Seahawks just managed to hold off New England for a huge win to remain unbeaten. 

That was not it, however. There was another big comeback by the defending champion Chiefs late in the fourth quarter, and into overtime, and they remained undefeated, at least for now. Tennessee and Jacksonville, two teams that most people figured would not be able to produce a ton of points, wound up having a shootout. The Bills stayed unbeaten and took sole possession of first place in the AFC East by beating the Dolphins in Miami. 

But the biggest game had to be the Cowboys and Falcons. That game was so good, that I felt it needed to be the one I started this weekend's review with.

So, here goes:

Dallas 40, Atlanta 39 - I am beginning with this game, which is out of order with the way that I did the preview. However, this seemed like such a good, exciting, and surprising game, that it deserved the accolades that it is receiving. When I first saw that the Falcons had taken a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, it was stunning. Admittedly, I was beginning to think that my high expectations of the Cowboys for this season may have been completely unfounded and off the mark. Little by little, they clawed their way back into the game, but the Falcons kept the lead. Atlanta kept answering back, enjoying a 19-point lead twice, and even enjoying a 15-point lead still with just over five minutes left to play in the game. Then came another collapse, one that will have people like me remembering too vividly what happened to the Falcons a few short years ago, after they owned a comfortable 28-3 lead over the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Yes, Atlanta collapsed once again, allowing the Cowboys to snatch victory from the jaws of almost certain defeat.

Chicago 17, NY Giants 13 - The only thing that I take solace from in this one is that the Giants defense tightened up late, and their offense finally got something going, and made a tight game of it. Yet, another loss for an 0-2 start. Even worse, Saquon Barkley is hurt with a serious injury, and will be out for an unknown amount of time. No real good news for fans of Big Blue. The Bears earned a solid victory, and remain unbeaten now at 2-0. My pick: Accurate


San Francisco 31, NY Jets 13 - This season reminds me of 1992 in one certain respect: San Francisco figures to be very good and they play two early season road games against the Jets and the Giants, most likely set to dominate both. In '92, the 49ers were 2-1 after week 3, having beaten both the Jets and the Giants by identical scores of 31-14, en route to a 14-2 mark. This season, the 49ers head into another game at the Meadowlands with a 1-1 mark, against a weak Giants team, and having just beaten the Jets in the Meadowlands, 31-13. It was not the worst drubbing that the Jets have taken from the 49ers - I personally was there with my son when they thumped the Jets, 34-0, back in 2012 - but it was still a pretty serious beatdown that left absolutely no doubts. Ironically, the 49ers are in last place at 1-1, with all three other teams in the division managing to stay undefeated at 2-0 so far. But I expect that the 49ers can and probably will overtake at least one, if not two of those teams, and are a legitimate contender to even win the division again. They looked very much like the team that won the NFC title last season in completely dismantling the Jets at the Meadowlands yesterday. My pick: Accurate


Buffalo 31, Miami 28 - Buffalo 31, Miami 28 – The Bills feel that this is finally their year to take a big step up and capture the AFC East title, something that has eluded them, despite having gotten more competitive in the past few seasons. They took a big step towards that goal on Sunday by defeating the Dolphins in Miami in what proved to be a shootout. But the Bills survived, managing not only their second win in as many games this season, but also taking their second straight divisional game. Their offense looks solid thus far, having scored 27 in the first game and 31 in this one, which shows that they have some explosiveness and can both move the ball as well as score some points. This, combined with the Patriots loss to the Seahawks on Sunday night, puts the Bills where they were aiming to be: in sole possession of first place. For the Dolphins, there were high hopes by many for them this season, but a tough 0-2 start feels like a setback for them, even though this season is still obviously very young yet. My prediction: Accurate 


Pittsburgh 26, Denver 21 - The Broncos at least fought for this one, albeit unsuccessfully. But we kind of knew that playing in Pittsburgh would be an incredibly tough test for them, right? Yes, the Steelers wound up winning it, even if they struggled a bit more than expected. Their offense does not look unstoppable, but still so far has solidly produced more than enough to remain competitive in every game, and in fact, they have won both to date. As for the Broncos, this was actually a positive sign that they may be on the rise, although it will take some time, and they obviously also have a ways to go. My pick: Accurate


Indianapolis 28, Minnesota 11 - The Colts finally got the job done a week after a bitter divisional loss to the Jaguars, which Indy and their fans surely feel they could and should have won. But they dominated Minnesota in this game, and earned their first win of the season, even if it is against an NFC opponent. They are now 1-1, tied with the Jaguars for second place in the AFC South, with both teams behind the still undefeated Titans. But as for Minnesota, after a great season last year in which they ranked near the elite teams on both offense and defense, and knocked out the Saints in New Orleans before bowing in San Francisco, this season has gotten off to a horrendous start. It kind of makes you wonder how good, or possibly not good, this team really is. They need to win, and soon, before this season spirals out of control. My pick: Accurate


Tennessee 33, Jacksonville 30 - This was not exactly the kind of game that I was figuring on between these two teams. Frankly, I was not sure that either of them had the kind of offense to produce this many fireworks between them. Yet, here we are, with once of the most high-scoring games of this past week, and it winds up being between these two teams. Go figure. A solid win for the Titans, who outlasted the Jaguars. Still, it was also a goof showing by Jax, and despite the 1-1 mark now, they look better than many people expected them to this season thus far. My pick: Accurate        


LA Rams 37, Philadelphia 19 - LA Rams 37, Philadelphia 19 – The Rams really seem to have returned to their form of two seasons ago, when they went all the way to the Super Bowl, and narrowly lost to the New England Patriots. So far this season, the Rams have defeated two presumed contenders, knocking off Dallas in week one, and then dominating the Eagles in Philadelphia here in week two. Indeed, the Rams are off to a solid 2-0 start, and right now, they look solid on both offense and defense. They certainly have earned their impressive and as yet unblemished 2-0 mark to this point. As for the Eagles…well, I considered them a contender earlier. But they certainly are not looking like they are a contender, after taking a big lead and then losing to Washington, then getting blown out by the Rams at home. Since taking a 17-0 lead against Washington, Philly has been outscored 64-19. You need to do a bit better than that to be a serious contender. A disappointing loss for them, to say the least.             


Green Bay 42, Detroit 21 - Once again, the Lions seemed to flirt with a surprise win after jumping ahead early in this game. And also once again, they began to come apart when that other team really started to apply serious pressure. Yes, once the Packers started to get back on the right track, they not only rallied to win after falling behind, 14-3, but they really were on a roll, crusing to a blowout win over another divisional opponent, the second in as many weeks. For the Lions, yet another setback in a season that surely is beginning to feel very long already for Detroit and their fans. This marks the 11th straight loss for the Lions, dating back to last season. The fact that they were ahead by sizable margins in both games, yet lost both, has to be especially frustrating. It is not a good sign for the Lions, to say the least. So early in the season, yet they urgently need to stop the bleeding. My pick: Accurate   


Tampa Bay 31, Carolina 17 – Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski finally got their first win as members of the Buccaneers. This was a solid win, albeit against a weak opponent. Still, a win is a win, and the Panthers are a divisional opponent, so it was important in that sense. The offense looked good. As for Carolina, they drop to 0-2, and have dropped 10 straight games dating back to last season. Brutal. My pick: Accurate             


Arizona 30, Washington 15 - The Cardinals are looking very good to this point. They seem to have an offense capable of scoring, and a defense that can contain opponents, at least thus far in the season. With an exciting young quarterback who seems to have added an element of explosiveness to their offense, and marked improvements on the defensive side of the ball, they are looking like a team that can actually contend, although it is early yet, and they are in an obviously tough division, with the defending NFC Champion 49ers in last place officially at 1-1 (hardly an awful mark) and the other two teams being undefeated at 2-0 like the Cards. As for Washington, this gets them down a bit from the high of the comeback win in week one, and sobers them up. But it is still early in the year. My pick: Accurate             


Baltimore 33, Houston 16 - The Ravens appear to be rolling once again, picking up this season where they left off last regular season. They have now won 14 straight regular season games (remember, they lost their one and only postseason game to the Titans in between), and just look incredible, as they move up to 2-0. But now, they have a home game hosting the defending Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs, which will obviously be their toughest test to date. As for the Texans, they fall to 0-2, and it is not looking very good for next weekend, either, as they go up to Pittsburgh to face the still undefeated Steelers. Brutal. My pick: Accurate


Kansas City 23, LA Chargers 20 (OT) - These are the kinds of games in which the best teams reveal just how great they can be. Everyone remembers the biggest games, like KC's incredible playoff run, when they became the first team in NFL history to overcome double digit deficits in every single playoff game and came back to win in explosive fashion. But not everyone will remember these kinds of games, when the Chiefs were not playing anywhere near their best, did not light up the scoreboard, yet pulled off a tough win. It's wins like these that help those elite, championship teams make it very far later on in the season and postseason. For a while, the Chargers enjoyed a 17-6 lead in the third quarter. That, of course, seems to be the point when these Chiefs always come alive, and they did again. Down 20-17 late in the fourth, they were unable to convert a chance in the red zone for a winning touchdown, so they got a field goal to force overtime. Then, in OT, Kansas City managed to win it off the foot of Harrison Butker, who incredibly split the uprights from 58 yards out for the win. It keeps the Chiefs undefeated at 2-0, and keeps them atop the AFC West. If the Raiders lose tonight, the Chiefs will have sole possession of first place. For the Chargers, they fought hard and almost won, but there really is no shame in allowing KC to slip the rug out from under them. It must be disheartening, but they have played two games so far this season, and have looked good in both of them. My pick: Accurate


Sunday Night Football: Seattle 35, New England 30 - What a game this one was! There were several exciting games this weekend, but the Sunday Night Football match-up pitted two legitimate contenders who actually also met in a recent Super Bowl. These two teams have met four times in the past eight years, and each of those games - including the Super Bowl - were very exciting and went right down to the wire. Last night's game was no exception, as the Seahawks were clinging to a 35-30 lead. New England's Cam Newton  was red hot, playing exceptionally well last night, both with his accurate and explosive arm, as well as with his legs, proving that his mobility was still a serious threat. He led the Pats all the way to the 1-yard line, but there was only time for one play left. The Patriots had just used up their last timeout, and it was clear that Newton was going to try to pound the ball into the end zone. But he was upended and fell quite short, preserving the victory for Seattle. They remain unbeaten at 2-0, tied with the also undefeated Rams and Cardinals atop the NFC West, while the Patriots drop to 1-1, and in second place behind Buffalo in the AFC East. My pick: Accurate


Monday Night Football: Las Vegas 34, New Orleans 24 – Talk about a surprising outcome (at least one that took me by surprise), the Raiders look incredible so far! I figured that they would be a playoff contender, and believe that I have them in the playoffs this season. But to defeat the Saints, a team that is a legitimate Super Bowl contender, is something beyond what I thought this team would be capable of. Yet, in the second quarter, it did not look like they could match up very well, as the Saints owned a comfortable 17-7 lead, and seemed to have everything going their way. But the Raiders scored and benefited from a New Orleans turnover to add a field goal and nod things up by halftime. Then, they managed to score a touchdown on their first drive of the second half. They never looked back, taking control of the game. At 31-24, with less than two minutes to play, Las Vegas head coach Jon Gruden gambled with a field goal that could have given the explosive and always dangerous Saints offense a short field to work with. But it proved to be profitable, as they made it to ice the win. Impressive! My prediction: Inaccurate

Autumnal Equinox is Today - September 22nd

When I was younger, it seemed that I never paid much attention to the equinoxes, the official, scientific changing of the seasons. Yes, I would hear that the new season was here, and kind of just shrug, maybe think to myself or even say, "Cool."

These days, I am much more cognizant of the changing of the seasons, and usually like to honor them with acknowledgement here, if possible.

So, today is the autumnal equinox. Technically, it will be here at 9:30 in the morning on Tuesday the 22nd of September. At that point, throughout the northern hemisphere, summer will officially be over, and the fall will be upon us.

It is one of my favorite times of the year, when the excessive heat of the summer recedes, and we have (for now) warm to moderate days, and cool to chilly evenings. Again, my favorite, personally.

Dallas Stars Own 1-0 Series Lead Entering Game 2 Tonight

Yes, the Western Conference Champion Dallas Stars had a bit more rest than the Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning entering this Stanley Cup Finals Series. Whether that accounted for the results in Game 1 or not is anybody's guess.

On Saturday night, the Stars dominated the Lightning, 4-1, to take the first game of this best of seven series. 

Historically, these two teams both are making their third ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance, with both having won one and lost one. The Dallas Stars were really good in the late nineties and early 2000's, getting to hoist the Cup in 1999, and then losing a tough series to the New Jersey Devils the following season.

Meanwhile, the Lightning won the Cup in 2004, and then qualified again in 2015, where they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, who were the dynasty of that era, and who went on to win their third Stanley Cup in six seasons.

Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals between Dallas and Tampa Bay will be tonight.

🏈 NFL 2020 Week 2 Preview 🏈

Here we are, heading into the second weekend of NFL action. Half the teams are undefeated, while the other half are winless and looking to win before they start off the season at 0-2, digging themselves a hole to try and dig out of. Nobody wants to start off 0-2.  An 0-2 start is not necessarily a death sentence, of course. 

Some teams have overcome far greater horrendous starts to the season, and earned their way to the playoffs. The 1992 San Diego Chargers started the season 0-4, and wound up winning the AFC West. The 1993 Houston Oilers were not winless, but 1-4, before they won out their remaining games to finish the season 12-4 to win their division and earn the second seed in the playoffs. And the 2015 Kansas City Chiefs started that season 1-5, before also winning out their remaining games to reach the postseason.  At the very least, an 0-2 start complicates matters, and makes the rest of the season a lot more difficult. Certainly teams have overcome 0-2 starts to reach the playoffs, but most teams that start off 0-2 do not. 

Only three teams in NFL history, the 1993 Dallas Cowboys and the 2007 New York Giants, managed to overcome 0-2 season starts to ultimately win the Super Bowl. A few others have also overcome such a miserable start to not only reach the postseason, but even to go deep into then playoffs.  However, these tend to be the exceptions, and not the rules. So for teams who felt that they had realistic hopes at going far this season, but who lost last weekend, it surely must feel imperative for them to turn things around and find their way to a win this weekend. Some of the teams that will especially feel the need to win to avoid an early disaster include Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Houston, Indianapolis and, to some extent, Minnesota.  

Let’s take a look at the upcoming games for week two of this season:             

Atlanta at Dallas – The Falcons did not look impressive in their season opener to Seattle last weekend. Then again, the ‘Boys hardly looked overwhelming in their loss to the Rams last weekend, either, but at least Dallas came close and lost on the road to a pretty decent team. Atlanta also played a good team, but looked miserable in getting blown out the way that they did. Frankly, the Cowboys are the better team, and will come in with a sense of urgency, obviously intent on avoiding the 0-2 start and digging a fairly deep hole for themselves. Watch for the Cowboys offense to finally show some of their real potential, which they hardly did against the Rams last weekend. My pick: Dallas              

Denver at Pittsburgh – The Broncos lost their first game of the season last weekend at home, and now have to travel across the country to take on a tough Steelers team in one of the most inhospitable environments in the league, if not in North American sports. The Steelers, meanwhile, played well in defeating the Giants at the Meadowlands last weekend, and should be riding high, feeling confident. They played quite well both on offense and on defense, and they should be able to get past the Broncos in this one. My pick: Pittsburgh     

         

Carolina at Tampa Bay – The Panthers seemed like they might be a playoff team at the midpoint of last season, before a complete collapse shook the franchise up considerably. They lost all eight of their remaining games, and their defense looked horrible in the last four games in particular, as opponents racked up 150 points in those four games, an average of 37.5 points allowed per game. While the Panthers offense was considerably better last weekend against the Raiders, they still lost, and allowed 34 points in so doing. They now head to Tampa, where Brady and Gronk are looking to get past the frustrations they faced in New Orleans last weekend, while obviously hoping to avoid the dismal 0-2 a start. Look for the Bucs to finally show some of their true offensive potential against a vulnerable Panthers defense, and for Tampa Bay to notch their first win for the season, as well. My pick: Tampa Bay            

  

Jacksonville at Tennessee – The Jaguars surprised quite a few people – myself included, admittedly – in winning last weekend. They surprised a seemingly quality Colts team, and have another divisional game this weekend, to boot. But this time, in Tennessee, the Titans defense should seal up the Jax offense better than the Colts defense did. It should be a tough, physical, low-scoring affair, with the Titans ultimately winning it. My pick: Tennessee            

  

Buffalo at Miami – The Bills looked solid in their home win against the Jets last weekend. But they will be leaving cool Buffalo, where the weather is gorgeous this time of the year, and heading to hot and humid Miami, where it should be uncomfortably hot and humid. I guess the league really wanted the extremes in weather this season when these two teams hook up. Otherwise, why would they play this game in Miami in September, and schedule the closing game of the season in frigid Buffalo, when the weather conditions will likely be brutally cold? It seems a little silly to me, but without fans in the stands, I guess the two teams will just have to buckle down and take care of business. Miami has some potential, despite that disappointing loss at New England last weekend. But the Bills are a tough team, and they swept the Dolphins last season, and have won three in a row against them overall. They know how important this game will be for them, and should play sharply. They are likely the better team, and I expect them to win out in a tough and close game, and the forecast calls for a soggy game, which should also help them stay cool and take advantage of that running game. My pick: Buffalo              

Detroit at Green Bay – Oh, boy. After a brutal loss that saw the Lions collapse against the Bears late in the game, ruining what had been a solidly played game, this team now has to go up to Lambeau Field, where they rarely seem to win. The Packers, meanwhile, should be flying high after the road win at Minnesota, and will likely take advantage of the notoriously tough home environment, where they lost only once last season. The Lions might be able to keep it close for the first half, but it is hard to see them keeping it close for long enough to actually have a chance to win, unless the Pack have a major letdown following their big win last weekend. Detroit have now lost ten straight games, dating back to a total collapse last season, when they dropped their final nine games. Hard to see how the Lions can win this one, either, frankly. The Packers are just too tough at this point. My pick: Green Bay              

Minnesota at Indianapolis – Both teams lost disappointing divisional games last weekend, and find themselves facing each other this weekend. These two teams only meet once every four seasons, so they are not especially familiar with one another. The Colts were a middle of the pack kind of team on both offense and defense last season, while the Vikings, by contrast, were closer to the top in both categories. But the Minnesota defense looked leaky last weekend against the Packers, and the Colts offense looks potentially dangerous this season. In another tough game for both teams, I see the Colts just outlasting the visiting Vikings. My pick: Indianapolis              

Washington at Arizona – The Washington Football Team, fresh off a solid come-from-behind win over the Eagles last weekend, will now travel across the country to take on the surely fired up Cardinals, who stunned the defending NFC champion 49ers in San Francisco last season. The Cardinals, with Kyler Murray, are building towards a promising future, and their offense could be very dangerous. Look for them to show some of that this weekend, and find their way to another solid win in this one. My pick: Arizona              

Kansas City at LA Chargers – The defending champions are just about the most well-rested team at this point, having won their season opener a week and a half ago over the Texans. They have the league’s best player in Patrick Mahomes, who earned NFL MVP honors two seasons ago, and then led the team to the Super Bowl title last season, winning the MVP award in that big game. They are riding high, and are the better of these two teams. Hard to see how the Chargers can stop that dangerous KC offense if they really get going. Look for the Chiefs to do just enough to spoil the Chargers home opener in the new Los Angeles stadium. My pick: Kansas City              

Baltimore at Houston – The Ravens once again looked incredible and intimidating in completely dismantling the Browns last week. Their offense and defense were very sharp, so they seem to be picking up where they left off last season, when they enjoyed the best record in the entire league, winning their final 12 regular season games, before being stunned by Tennessee in the postseason. The Texans were a playoff team last season as well, but they had to face two of the toughest teams in the entire league to open this season. They do have home field advantage, but I suspect that the Ravens will still prove a bit too much for them this week. They have a very dangerous offense with an unpredictable quarterback who can kill opponents with either his arm or his legs, and they have a very tough defense. That should be enough to assure plenty of wins this season, and this should be one of them. My pick: Baltimore              

Sunday Night Football – New England at Seattle – A rematch of Super Bowl XLIX, with the infamous “second and one” interception that some people  myself included, consider the worst play call in NFL history, given the gravitas  The Pats won the first of the rematches, but this time should be different. The Seahawks are riding high, with every expectation to contend for the NFC West title and possibly enjoy a deep run in the playoffs. With home field advantage to boot, they should prove a bit too tough for the Patriots in this one, even with the coaching wizardry of Bill Belichick. My pick: Seattle     

        

MNF – New Orleans at Las Vegas – The explosive black and gold take on the also explosive black and silver. What an opening game to christen their new stadium in their new city. Both teams have expectations of qualifying for the playoffs, although for the Saints, they have bigger expectations for possibly reaching the Super Bowl. Their window of opportunity is closing, with star quarterback Drew Brees not getting any younger. Their offense has been explosive under Brees for many years now, and they looked dangerous in their win against Tampa last weekend. True, the Raiders are up and coming, a rising team, and they got a big road win in Carolina last weekend. But the Saints are a much tougher test for them, even in their new home in Las Vegas, and the Saints should pull this one off. My pick New Orleans      

RIP, Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The big headline today, of course, is the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.              

Ginsburg had been sick for many years. Sadly, she passed yesterday at 87 years old.              

It was horrific to see the almost glee among many Trump fans. There is one college classmate that I have who's a Trump fan. He apparently thought it would be hilarious to put an imitation poster of the old movie "A Weekend at Bernie's" involving Ruth Bader Ginsburg. 

On the day that she died. Just hours after she died, really.

Not to be outdone, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - the same man who insisted early in 2016 that a new Supreme Court nominee should by rights wait until after a new president came to power - made sure everyone understood that they intend to rush through a nominee to be the next Supreme Court Justice.

Stay classy, Trump fans.

For once, Trump himself actually sounded respectful, which was a bit of a surprise. It must have been hard for him to keep the hatred and the cynical, vengeful remarks locked up.
