Cory Booker Establishes a Record For Longest Ever Senate Speech To Try & Jumpstart Some Democratic Resistance to Trump

To his credit, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker - who represents my home state of New Jersey - gave the longest ever speech before the Senate yesterday.

Well, technically, it began on Monday night. The Senate rules mandated that a Senator has to stand, which Booker did.

This was meant as a form of opposition to the Trump White House and it's agenda, as well as the erosion of American democracy which has taken place under Trump. Frankly, other than Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with their current tour, this was the first real sign of any Democrats actually standing up (both figuratively and literally, in this case) to Trump since the transfer of power back in January.

It was also an attempt to rally the anti-Trump resistance. That much I can absolutely get behind.

Not sure if it will work. There is simply no way to tell for certain whether or not this will inspire and embolden more Democrats, or if they will roll over and go back to sleep.

At the very least, it was something.

Also, Booker wanted to erase Strom Thurmond's record for longest speech when he attempted to block civil rights legislation from passing with his filibuster. That much he managed to do now. And it was not in an attempt to limit the rights of Americans, as was the case with Thurmond. This came at a most crucial time, when American democracy seems to be at its most vulnerable.

Again, let's see what, if any, impact this will have. But at least it's something. Someone made news headlines by attempting to do something to stand up to Trump and his Project 2025 agenda. I, for one, applaud Booker's efforts.
