Tearful Jon Stewart Says Goodbye on Finale

Well, that's a wrap!

Jon Stewart had his last show with the Daily Show, the fake news program that he made hugely popular and relevant in American political discourse.

There were guest appearances by numerous correspondents along the way, including, of course, Stephen Colbert. But Colbert was only in his iconic character for a little while, before he got serious, and thanked a tearful and visibly uncomfortable Stewart for giving him and so many other comedians a chance, and guiding the way, showing how to do everything right.

Stewart offered a behind the scenes glimpse at the people that make the show what it is, and he thanked them, Comedy Central, his family, and the viewers for everything, and he did so in a humble and sincere manner.

It closed out with Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band performing This Train from their recent album a few years back, then closing out the show with Born to Run.

And now, that's it!

No more Jon Stewart bringing us a better picture of the reality in the United States today than major American media does.

Again, he will be missed.

I have spoken here of Stewart before, and have long admired his show. In particular, my favorite time following the show was during the Bush years, and especially in and around the Iraq invasion. What the country needed was a cold, hard dose of reality, and that is what he brought to it through the television set each weekday evening.

So, despite my own sadness that he is leaving, I also want to be thankful that we had his presence for as long as we did, and that he brought us something of real quality for all of that time.
