Michael Cohen Portrays Trump as Liar & Criminal

Trump's former lawyer, who Trump used to repeatedly describe as "a good man," testified before Congress yesterday, and painted a bleak picture of the man, both before his rise to the presidency, and since he officially took office.

According to Cohen, there is an extensive pattern in history of Donald Trump lying and conducting himself in a criminal manner. Some people are going so far as to suggest that Cohen description of Trump's behavior is reminiscent of the Mob!

Members of Trump's Republican party took to the microphones and blasted Cohen, attacking his credibility, and suggesting that Cohen himself has a history of lying. Cohen did not refute these charges, but seemed to use the weight of these accusations against the credibility of the President.

So, Cohen brought some proof for some of the most damning evidence he gave against Trump. That includes a copy of the check, signed by then President Trump, to pay Cohen back for the $130,000 that Cohen paid to keep Stormy Daniels silent during the campaign.

Cohen condemned Trump's behavior since his former boss took over the Oval Office. But, he said that he is done protecting Trump:

“He is a racist. He is a con man. And he is a cheat.”

“I am not protecting Mr. Trump anymore.”

Indeed, Cohen apologized for being such an enthusiastic backer of Trump, and for defending him. According to Cohen, Trump is "Fundamentally disloyal." However, he at least claimed that he is trying to make amends.

“Sitting here today, it seems unbelievable that I was so mesmerized by Donald Trump that I was willing to do things for him that I knew were absolutely wrong.”

“Being around Mr. Trump was intoxicating.”

Cohen stated that, despite Trump's promise to "Make America Great Again," he was more interested in trying to make capitalize on great opportunities to add to his already considerable wealth. According to Cohen, Trump was much more interested "to make his brand great, not to make our country great."

Some of Cohen's hardest punches towards Trump came during his closing statement:

"I'd like to say directly to the president: We honor our veterans — even in the rain. We tell the truth even when it doesn't aggrandize you. You respect the law and our incredible law enforcement agents. You don't villainize them.

"You don't disparage generals, Gold Star families, prisoners of war and other heroes who had the courage to fight for this country. You don't attack the media and those who question what you don't like or what you don't want them to say and you take responsibility for your own dirty deeds.

"You don't use your power of your bully pulpit to destroy the credibility of those who speak out against you. You don’t separate families from one another or demonize those looking to America for a better life. You don't vilify people based on the god they pray to and you don’t cuddle up to our adversaries at the expense of our allies. And finally you don’t shut down the government before Christmas and New Year's just to simply appease your base.

"This behavior is churlish, it denigrates the office of the president and it's un-American and it's not you."

Cohen also confirmed the worst fears that some people, myself included, have of Trump, which is that he will not peacefully give up the office of the president should he lose the next election. Here is what Cohen said:

"I fear that if he loses the election in 2020, that there will never be a peaceful transition of power. And this is why I agreed to appear before you today."

Scary thought.

These are the numerous articles that I employed in writing this particular blog entry about Cohen's testimony regarding Donald Trump yesterday:

Image result for charbor chronicles short news clips

We know that the victory of nationalist Donald Trump to the White House in 2016 has seen stunning changes in the United States. The nation has not felt this divided in recent history, and that is saying something, given the racial and political tensions that dominated headlines in the 1960's, or the political divides during the Bush years. There has also been a spike in hate crimes, and it feels like there is a general rise in ugliness, in truly reprehensible behavior and thought.

As we also all know, the United States is a huge country, and for now, the world's leading superpower. So, what happens here has reverberations around the world.

Unfortunately, the trend away from a more enlightened mode of thinking, and towards greater democracy, and towards more totalitarian thinking and actions, predated Trump. Trump was the big victory in that direction, however, and if there were waves warning of an approaching storm before, that storm is gathering strength now. Everywhere, nationalist movements have gained strength. We see LePen becoming a political force in France, we see the rather extremist Alternative for Germany (AfD) now standing as Germany's second party, while other nationalist movements are clearly gaining steam in nations like Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece. We have also seen extremist governments take over in some eastern European nations, like Hungary, and Poland. There have been even stronger moves away from democracy in Russia, Turkey, and the Philippines.

But perhaps no place feels as alarming as the rise of Bolsonaro in Brazil. The newly elected President there was almost like a follow-up to Donald Trump's rise to the White House, and it has a huge impact. After all, Brazil is the regional superpower in South America. And his denial of climate change rivals that of the more infamous American climate change deniers, only the stakes are perhaps even higher, given the extreme importance of the Amazon rain forest being primarily in northern Brazil. Bolsonaro's policies are likely to lead not only to increased destruction of that rain forest, but even worse, to an outright acceleration of it.

Indeed, that is scary. To have an irresponsible, Trump-like politician making decisions about the delicate situation in the Amazon rain forest is very scary.

Yet, the damage that Bolsonaro is capable of is not restricted to that. Many felt that he brought many of the same negatives as the elected leader of Brazil that Trump has brought into the Oval Office. Bolsonaro has had a past history of xenophobia, with comments and attitudes that betray a clear and blatant racism, homophobia, and sexism.

And, of course, he seems to not be a big fan of democracy, and has glorified the military dictatorships in the not so recent past for Brazil.

And here is another scary thing that has just happened. Brazil's Ministry of Education recently made the decision that students returning from that country's summer break (remember, Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, so summer comes at exactly the opposite time of year as the one in the northern hemisphere does) should sing the national anthem, and that school staff should send footage of the children singing the national anthem to the ministry.

That is some Big Brother kind of stuff, is it not?

There was such an outrage over the decision, that the Ministry decided to back out of that.

"I recognize the error," Education Minister Ricardo Velez Rodriguez told reporters in Brasilia.

Well, good. However, the children and their parents are not out of it entirely. The Ministry decided to instruct school administrations to read a declaration to students, and this declaration included a campaign slogan used by none other than Bolsonaro. This is the slogan:

"Brazil above everything, God above everyone."

That is something that smacks of nationalism, and borders on fascist values. It would be a little bit like if the powers that be in Washington decided that a declaration that used Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan had to be read to American students.

In short, it clearly touches a nerve, and many feel it is yet one more instance of a creeping rise of fascism in Brazil. Perhaps a softer form of fascism, at least for the time being, but fascism nevertheless.

Scary times we live in.

Oregon Makes History as First State to Tackle Skyrocketing Housing Prices Statewide Rent Control

We all know that the cost of living in the United States has been going up and up and up now for several decades. Obviously, that includes rent prices. All of this has happened while statistics traditionally reveal that wages are not keeping up.

For the first time, one state has taken action to contain the prices for housing, which has spiraled out of control.

Indeed, Oregon has seen rent rates increase by over 14 percent in recent years. It is especially bad in the largest city in the state, Portland, where rents have increased a whopping 30 percent in less than a decade.

Lawmakers felt it was time for action.

In explaining this measure, Oregon Governor Kate Brown issued a statement yesterday. Here is part of her statement:

“There is no single solution — not one entity, or one person — that can solve Oregon’s housing crisis.

“This new legislation is one of many actions Oregon needs to take to address our housing crisis. While it will provide some immediate relief, we need to focus on building supply in order to address Oregon’s housing challenges for the long term.”

Trump Claims Himself as Victim of Racism

President Trump, who many people believe to be a racist, has claimed that he himself is a victim of racism.

Indeed, Trump lashed out against filmmaker Spike Lee's Oscar speech, going as far as to call it a "racist hit on your president."

Lee had won his first Oscar for "best adapted screenplay" for his movie, "BlacKkKlansman," which he also directed. He took the opportunity to lash out at Trump, and to try and mobilize opponents of Trump for the upcoming election in 2020.

House of Representatives Passes Resolution Which Rejects Trump's National Emergency Declaration

A resolution terminating President Trump's national emergency declaration passed the House of Representatives by a 245-182 vote yesterday. It was originally introduced by Democratic Rep. Julian Castro of Texas.

This is also symbolic, as it serves as strong condemnation of what a majority of Americans believes is a gross misuse and abuse of presidential powers by Trump.

Yet, although there were 13 Republican House members - all moderates - who joined with the Democrats in passing this resolution, it would require a lot more Republicans voting in favor of it in order to become veto-proof. That means that, for all intents and purposes, that Trump's state of emergency is still in effect, regardless of this symbolic rebuke.

Michael Cohen Will Give Damning & Damaging Details About Trump's Lawbreaking Both Before and While in the White House

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen is set to testify against his former client, who obviously now sits in the Oval Office.

Cohen will be giving details to Congress later today that will illustrate that Trump is guilty of "lies, racism and cheating," and that he broke the law while president. Cohen will also remind Congress that Trump is a "convicted liar."

According to an NPR article by Ryan Lucas, an anonymous source has revealed that "Cohen is prepared to present evidence, including documents, related to what Cohen says is criminal conduct by Trump from both before and after he became president, the person said. The individual spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the planned testimony."

The circus known as the Trump presidency continues.

Russian Television Lists American Military Sites That Will Be Targeted

Over the weekend, Russian state television aired a list of American military facilities that would be targeted in the event of a nuclear attack. During this report, it was suggested that a hypersonic missile Russia is currently developing would be able to hit these targets in less than five minutes. Among the more famous sites were the Pentagon and Camp David, the historical presidential retreat of American presidents for many decades now.

Trump has made a point of saying that arms control treaties with Russia are outdated, and he pulled out of them. Putin stated that if American missiles are placed in Europe and aiming for Russia, then he would have to respond with missiles carried by submarines near American waters, and within striking distance of these targets.

A Pentagon spokesman, Eric Pahon, more or less dismisses these claims, stating that these kinds of threats actually tend to unite and strengthen the resolve of NATO members:

“Every time Putin issues these bombastic threats and touts his new doomsday devices, he should know he only deepens NATO’s resolve to work together to ensure our collective security.”

And we all believed that the Cold War truly was over, eh?

Humpback Whale Washes Up By Amazon River in Brazil

Sad news from the Amazon in Brazil, and it has nothing to do with their Trump-like newly elected leader, Jair Messias Bolsonaro.

A young Humpack Whale was found washed ashore near the mouth of the Amazon. It is very strange, and has scientists perplexed, because the usual migration practices of Humpacks do not have them anywhere near this region during this time of the year. Normally, Humpbacks are near Antarctica during this time.

The whale was discovered nearly over 15 meters (nearly 50 feet) from water.

Again, a sad story. Here is the link:

Congratulations to My Parents on Actually Moving to Their New Home!!

Well, it finally happened!

The first step came in November, something that I found out about while driving back from a mini vacation/trip to upstate New York in the Adirondacks to visit my brother, with a day in Montreal on the side.

The second step came closing day, which happened less than two weeks into January, and which I accompanied my parents to, and brought a bit of stuff.

But the third and biggest step was to actually move. Unfortunately, this crucial step was delayed for several reasons, and so it wound up not happening until late February - fully a month and a half after the closing day.

That is unusually late, as my girlfriend and I moved into the new apartment/house fully just a few days after the closing day, although our circumstances were very different. It was in the same town, and actually within walking distance.

My father can suffer through some severe pain, so any long trip would have to be on a day when he was relatively well. Also, my parents had doctor's appointments that complicated their departure, and they needed me to assist. And my schedule can be quite complicated between two jobs and other responsibilities. As if all of that were not enough, we had to have a period where the weather cooperated.

Well, it finally all came together this past weekend. I had taken a day off (actually a night off, from Monday night into Tuesday morning) to maximize the chances of acceptable weather. I kept checking, and the weather forecast seemed cooperative. So, we finally committed to making this the weekend when it happens. I made reservations to rent an SUV for more space than my car, in order to bring some furniture that they wanted to bring (mostly, it wound up being a table and their bed).

Finally, after my final overnight shift on Saturday night Sunday morning, I took a short nap, than headed to my parent's place, and we did our last bit of packing. It was unusually stressful to get everything out of the old house and into the SUV. But after a much longer time than expected, we finally got as much stuff as it could take, and I headed up - a couple of hours after I had originally wanted to leave. My parents left a bit later, as they still had to get some stuff into their car.

I had wanted to get there with plenty of daylight. As it turned out, it was just under the gun. I got there while there was still just a bit of daylight left, and managed to get the SUV unpacked just before it got really dark, which was nice. Then, I had a bit of downtime before my parents arrived. I had brought my portable DVD player, and fluctuated between reading my book, and watching that. Frankly, it felt nice to relax, although it felt strange being in a clearly empty house while it was dark, and not being able to do much of anything else.

About an hour and a half to two hours later, my parents finally did arrive. They got there, and brought the traumatized cat with them, who was very vocal about her displeasure throughout the ride. She also went right to hiding immediately once she was let out of her portable cage.

But we were all too exhausted to do what I had wanted to do on that first day, which was set up their bed, so that they would at least have a place to sleep that night. We went out to grab a bite to eat, and it wound up being at Burger King, a place that I had not eaten at in many, many years. Not exactly my first choice, but in a small town in upstate New York as it is getting late on a Sunday evening, you cannot be too picky, right?

We then went to the local motel, and my parents got a couple of rooms, so that we could at least get some much needed rest.

The next morning, we got some breakfast. We originally wanted to get that at the local Texas Cafe, but it was closed. Again, you cannot be too picky for a small town in upstate New York on what turned out to be a cold and snowy morning, so we got some breakfast at the local Taco Bell. My father had wanted to do that at Burger King, but we had the misfortune of arriving there at 10:32, and we were told that they had stopped serving breakfast at 10:30am. That level of inflexibility, mixed with the strange notion that people would actually order lunch instead of breakfast at 10:30 a.m., was a bit annoying, so we opted for Taco Bell. There, we found that they do not take the "fast" part of fastfood all that seriously. They apologized and said that they were understaffed, although it seemed that there were actually a lot of people back there. But, whatever.

That was when we hoped to finally try and comfort the cat. Once she had arrived at her new home, the cat was scared and, understandably, hid. That first night, we were all too wiped out to do much of anything, except get reservations at the local motel. When we came back with the breakfast, the cat was hiding. I found her on the top step, next to the closed door. Her ears were folded down, and she was staring off into the distant. Even as I approached, she showed no reaction, and continued to state. I had to talk in my soothing, encouraging voice, and pet her, before she finally calmed down a bit. It still took a while, and she went down one step at a time, spending a minute or two on each step, and examining her surroundings. But she did eventually seem much more comfortable, and at one point, it seemed like she was going from person to person, getting reassurances and love from Mom, Pop, and myself, and going back and forth, like the endless recycling logo, except for love and encouragement. She hid again when we left to go furniture & grocery shopping, but apparently came out an hour after the couch and love set delivery guys left, and maybe half an hour after I left.

That first full day was spent mostly driving around, looking for furniture, and doing a bit of grocery shopping. Mostly, it was about covering the bases for at least the bare essentials, to make living their at least feasible for the first few days. We did that, and they were able to get their first new furniture delivery that day, a new couch and love seat combo that both my parents felt was comfortable. But it was getting late in the afternoon, and there really was not even much time after that. I needed to start getting back, and so once again, I did not get as much done as I had hoped for them.

As for me, I left hoping to avoid the storm and the strong winds, but got caught in some fairly serious snow flurries, and the more serious gusting winds. I progressed slowly, and needed to take some breaks to eat and just relax, waiting out the storms. So, I got to some landmark areas later than expected. Reached Binghamton just before midnight, and stopped shortly thereafter at the Pennsylvania border, because I was too worn out to continue. Was starting to feel woozy, and my mind felt cloudy. Not conditions to drive, especially at night on a windy, potentially stormy night. So, it was time for some shuteye.

Finally woke up shivering some hours later, and it was in the wee hours. Wound up getting home around 4:40am. Not much fun. That said, I did see a bald eagle along the way during the snowstorm (actually, just before it really started sticking, or just as it did). I had noticed some crows eating a dead carcass on the side, and saw that one of them had different colored feathers. But as it flew away, I saw a white head and some white on the wings, and saw in clear profile a bald eagle. Only the second time I saw one in the wild like that, and what a thrill that was! Wish I had the opportunity to take a picture, but the circumstances were not right. I also could not get a bright red cardinal in the snow literally just outside of my motel window earlier yesterday morning for the same reason.

It was not as productive or as complete a move as I had hoped for, and I had wanted to do much more to help make their move a bit smoother. To make the new house feel a bit more like an actual home sooner. But nevertheless, they seemed happy to have finally made the move, and despite feeling that I could and should have done more, there was some contentment to have done something to help them finally make this transition.

Congratulations to them on the move to their beautiful new home, and my sincerest best wishes to them for the future!

It seemed logical to add the previous blog entry about my parents new place. No new pictures were added from this trip, although I think it will make more sense to perhaps do this next time, when the house feels less empty, and when the pictures of the empty house below can be contrasted with a more homey feel next time, hopefully! In any case, here is the blog entry that I published for them shortly after out trip there last month:

Congratulations to My Parents on Their New Home! originally published on January 12, 2019:

Many years ago, my parents retired. They began the arduous search for an ideal house, in a hopefully ideal location, that they could peacefully enjoy their retirement years in.

This search went on and on. It lasted years. There were trips to various regions, including upstate New York to the north, the Shenandoah Valley to the south, and West Virginia to the southwest. They were looking online at some homes in Pennsylvania, and as far away as Tennessee. Some homes looked good, even really good. But it always seemed that when they found what appeared to be the ideal home, something went wrong. Either the house wound up not offering anywhere near as much as the online description suggested, or the house had just gotten sold.

Obviously, when these kinds of incidents pile up, one after the other, it was a frustrating process. I even remember a point when my parents essentially gave up, and just decided that they would retire at their present house, even though they were tired of living in suburban New Jersey for various reasons, not least of which being the high cost of living and taxes. Also, that house has had some problems, and in some cases some bad memories, attached to it for years.

Perhaps that is why they resumed their search before too long. Suddenly, there were trips to distant locations again. Suddenly, they were looking at some homes again online.

Then, in November, they found the ideal house, almost by accident. The local real estate agent was hesitating to even show them the house, since it was perched on a hill, and with the winters in upstate New York, where this house is located, being quite harsh, she thought it might be too much for them. But my father suggested that they might as well take a look while there are up there. Why not, right?

Well, this ended up being the one! It was a great house, in a relatively ideal location, by a town with some life to it. The house appeared to be in good shape, and was exactly what they were looking for! Best of all, it was affordable. Very affordable!

When I found out, it was while my son and I were coming home from a trip up north to the Adirondacks and to Canada over an extended weekend. I called my mom, and she said that she had some news, that they had bought a house, and it was a done deal already. It was a shock, but I hoped that it was what they were looking for.

It is ironic that I found out that they had bought the house while returning from a trip to Canada, because I went up to accompany them, and help move in the first few items into their new home this past week, and fit in a brief trip to another part of Canada, one that was a couple of hours drive away from their new location. I had to see the house for myself, because of how amazing it sounded and looked. I saw the pictures, and could hardly believe that they had managed to find such a beautiful place for so cheap!

It really is a magnificent home! It has three bedrooms, and another room that, I think, could be turned into a bedroom, if they so wish. It also has two full bathrooms, and a decent amount of property. Not excessive. It is not a mansion. But it is nice. Surely, the nicest home that either of them likely has had.

They earned it, I think. Both of them worked long and hard hours for many years. My father had suffered some physical injuries and endured ailments, to the point that he is partially crippled. And they had been searching long and far for a decent, affordable home to be able to enjoy their retirement in.

Frankly, I do not think that they could have found a much better place, or more bang for their buck than they did with their new place.

It is perched on a hill and overlooks the town below, which is surprisingly vibrant and full of businesses, in an area where most towns do not have all of that going for them. They live on a hill that could prove treacherous during the winter, but they are ready to prepare for that by buying enough in advance to last several weeks, if need be.

Seemingly, they are set in the new place. I sure do hope it works out for them, and believe that it will. Really, it is a beauty.

Congratulations again to my parents on their well-deserved, beautiful new home!

George Harrison

I try not only to acknowledge, but also to honor the birthdays of the Beatles, since they are all not only decent guys, but had such a profound impact on the world, both with their music, and with their passion outside of music. They not only were from the sixties, a time of turbulence, experimentation, and change, but they also helped to mold the sixties, to let it become what it became. It remain influential and provocative to this day.

George Harrison was known as the "Quiet Beatle" and was also the youngest member of the Fab Four. He was particularly known for his spirituality, and bringing an Indian influence to the Beatles, with the sitar in particular, something that had not been heard in western music before, but became popular afterwards.

He grew as a songwriter, with the obvious privilege of working under legendary songwriters John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Eventually, he wrote some of the most iconic tunes that the Beatles are known for in his own right, and went on to have a pretty amazing solo career as well.

His concert for Bangladesh set the tempo for tribute concerts since.

Years later, he joined numerous other legendary musicians to form the Traveling Wilburys, a "super group", if you will, for it's day.

Harrison died of cancer in 2001, but his music and memory lives on in so many ways.

On this day, his birthday, I pay tribute to him.

Remembering Lollapalooza '92

Lately, I have been thinking a bit about Lollapalooza. I went to one in the nineties, and still feel a bit privileged  that I did so. But the pinnacle one, as far as I am concerned, likely had to be the traveling Lollapalooza festival of '92.

I have been to many concerts, but there are some regrets over shows that I could have seen, but did not. One of my big regrets is not having caught one of these shows.

And, since I have been reflecting lately, it seemed appropriate to share a few cool video clips that I have discovered on Youtube lately.

Enjoy!

While we are at it, might as well add the link when I reminisced about my day at Lollapalooza back in 1996. The ticket stubs for these festivals always seemed to insist that the ticket holder "Take the Day Off."

I did. And boy, am I glad that I did! Great show, wonderful memories!

Snow Briefly Covers Normally Sunny & Warm Southwestern United States

No, I will not regularly get into the habit of talking about the weather here, unless it becomes very significant and/or unavoidable.

However, it seems worth noting that on Friday, southern California and Arizona got hit with some measurable snowfall. There are some odd pictures that I have seen of desert scenes uncharacteristically covered in snow. Joshua Trees in southern California, and Saguaro cactus, and other cactus, over by Tuscon.

My son and I visited the southwestern desert a couple of times, and loved it! I had heard a lot about how the desert blooms after rain, but really did not get much of an opportunity to see it. But seeing the desert in the snow would probably be surreal! There is really no way to predict when snow might hit, so most people who are not locals living there during the winter would tend to miss this phenomenon.

Remember, these are places that seldom see snow. There were a few Facebook friends who said beforehand that they would believe it when they see it.

Well, they saw it. And the images are striking. Thought it looked beautiful and worth sharing, so here are some links below, so that you can click and see these stunning images for yourself.

Trump Jr. "Jokes" About Tragedy of the Native American Genocide

A few weeks ago, Elizabeth Warren announced her intentions to make a White House run for the 2020 race.

Without delay, President Trump predictably took a swipe at her, and it also seemed that in so doing, some have taken it as a seeming shot at Native Americans as well, as he appears to have taken a mocking tone towards the genocide of Native Americans, specifically the Trail of Tears incident, by putting all caps for the word "TRAIL."

Here is what Trump tweeted:

"Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President. Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!" the President tweeted on Saturday. CNN has reached out to the White House seeking additional comment on the tweet.

Not to be outdone, Trump's son, appropriately named Donald Trump Jr., followed up on that by posting "a screenshot of his father's tweet on Instagram along with a reply by another user that said":

"The Native American genocide continues with another murder by the president."

Trump. Jr captioned his post: "Savage!!! Love my President."

All class these guys, eh?

The Trump family is an embarrassment and a disgrace to this nation. It is 2019, and these wealthy WASP's are making light of the suffering of Native Americans, to go along with their other well-documented xenophobic moments and attitudes.

Again, the whole world is watching! What a pathetic family. What a dark moment for this country, to have such idiots in charge.

This family, and their supporters, are the literal face of the "Ugly Americans."

Here is the link to this truly sad story, that reveals the depths of the indifference and narcissism of this ridiculous family, one that enough American people voted into office to be the main faces and voices of the country, while the entire world watches. Sad, just sad:

Mike Pence ‘Visibly Shaken’ After Receiving Stony Silence in Germany After Praising President Trump's Supposed Accomplishments

During the 2016 campaign, candidate Donald Trump told his overly eager audiences that the entire world was laughing at the United States. He promised that, once in the White House, all of this would change. Nobody would dare laugh at the United States any longer, and everyone would be amazed at how strong and confident the nation would be.

Trump also promised his same group of gullible supporters that the United States would just win and win once he was in the Oval Office. In fact, he went so far as to suggest that Americans would grow so used to all of the winning, that they would even get tired of it, and ask Trump to slow it down, if not outright brake, then at least put his foot off the pedal. But he would not do it, because as the elected President, it would be his job to make sure his country just kept on winning. He also promised, of course, not to have time to play golf while he was occupying the White House.

In fact, there were quite a few promises that candidate Trump made. Make Mexico pay for his vanity border wall. He promised to defeat ISIS in 30 days. He promised to be the greatest job creating president in history, and that the economy would be off the charts strong. He promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, and to overhaul the healthcare system, and promised that under his plan, all Americans would have access to affordable healthcare, and that exorbitant prices would go down. He promised a massive infrastructure plan to rebuild American roads and bridges and such. He promised to save the coal industry. He promised that he had a plan to pay the national debt during eight years of his presidency. He promised to establish a Muslim registry, even though that would be unconstitutional. And once he was elected, he also promised to be the "president for all Americans."

Let's fast-forward two years and change. Did he fulfill those promises? Well, some of those promises are still presumably in the works. There might yet be a massive infrastructure bill, as he promised. The economy has been up and down, and in very typical fashion, he quickly takes credit for it when things look rosy, but quickly lays blame elsewhere - at anyone but him, frankly - when things have gone wrong. He gave himself eight years to pay off the national debt. And while he has been in office for only two years and change, the national debt has only been added to by two trillion. That is one trillion for each year that Trump has been in office, and the fact that his tax breaks for the wealthy are a huge part of the reason for this means that the blame goes on him. He now has six years - presuming he gets a full six years - to pay a national debt that is now significantly larger than when he took over.

These as of yet not completed promises I would chalk up to as defeats, because after all, Trump should be measured up to what he promised, and he promised everyone the world. He claimed to be the master at the art of the deal, right? So, when things get stalled in Congress, and he quickly lays blame on them, the fact of the matter is that a bit of the blame, at the very least, should go to the man who makes that wild claim of being the greatest deal-maker in history.

In other instances, however, he clearly lied or greatly overestimated his own abilities. Or, to put it another way, he failed. Most famously, he failed to make Mexico pay for that wall. In fact, the country saw the longest government shutdown in history because Trump did not get the funding he felt appropriate to build the wall that he promised to make Mexico pay for.  In other words, he lied. He did not get the record for job creation. He did not really repeal and replace Obamacare, despite a Republican majority in Congress through his first two years in office. Nor did he create a healthcare system in which all Americans would have access to affordable healthcare, and prices have not gone down. ISIS was not defeated, and it has been much more than 30 days. He did not save the coal industry. He could not produce the Muslim registry, because it is unconstitutional, something that even his supporters, who sure claim to love the Constitution and Bill of Rights when it comes to the second amendment, should have been well aware of.

So, what has he done during his time in office?

For all his rhetoric and his pomp, his crass, loudmouthed approach which so many conservatives applauded and found refreshing, his policies so strangely resemble what has come before, that it is uncanny. The only difference is that now, it is like the country is taking this plunge on steroids. Wreck the environment? Check. Wreck the economy with yet more incentives and tax breaks for those who need it least, and put the burden on those who can least afford it? Check. Pull the United States out of inconvenient international treaties, thus ruining America's trustworthiness and reputation around the world? Check. Abuse his presidential power by declaring a state of emergency simply because he could not convince Congress to give him more money for the wall that he promised Mexico would pay for in the first place? Check. Disgrace the country before the entire world with racist behavior, from the infamous labeling of dozens of African and Central American countries  as "shithole nations" to his stubborn refusal to specifically condemn outright Nazis and white supremacists who marched and incited violence on American streets? Check. Continually making an ass of himself with petty, mean-spirited tweets, when he should, as President, have bigger concerns and an ability to rise above the fray? Check.

The world is indeed watching. And if his claims that the world was laughing at us while he was running, there certainly has been evidence - strong, irrefutable evidence - that they are laughing now. And we have Trump to thank for all of that. After all, it was Trump's ballooned image as a crying baby that went up over London skies during a visit that he took there last year. And it was in Trump's face that world leaders assembled at the United Nations literally laughed when he made his ridiculous claims of being such an accomplished and amazing president, something that usually flies and gets thunderous applause during one of his rallies, but which clearly gets a much cooler reception outside of one of those ridiculous rallies.

And now, just days ago, Vice-President Mike Pence was expecting applause when he mentioned Donald Trump and alluded to his supposed accomplishments.

They did not laugh, but they remained silent, clearly unimpressed. And that video has spread, and become quite a bit of a joke.

Here is a link to this video of Pence's cool reception upon mentioning Trump:

Trump's Pick For Climate Panel Compares Environmentalists Desire to Eradicate Carbon Dioxide Emissions to 'Jews under Hitler'

Earlier today, I posted something about how ridiculous Trump's ego is, and how sad it is that tens of millions of Americans want to bask in the flashlight beam of Trump's personal MAGAlomania, while ignoring their truer potential, which could be as bright as the sun, if they so allowed it.

In that piece, I alluded to the idea that Trump goes to extremes and outright lies in his personal approach, which has now been extended, obviously, to his approach towards the office of the presidency which he now, sadly, holds.

Not surprisingly, Trump has picked like-minded people to populate his administration. We have seen this numerous times already, with Trump,  typically inflating how great some of these people are, often only to turn around and completely trash them later on, when they do something that displeases him.

But right now, he picked somebody new, William Happer, to lead a panel exploring whether climate change is a serious national threat or not.

Happer feels as Trump does, and his stance on it is that the whole climate change thing is a hoax, and does not pose a real threat. Here is one absolutely ridiculous thing that Happer said in this regard just a few years ago, in 2014 according to an article by John Whitehouse:

So much so, in fact, that he said that people deserve to learn "the scientific truth, that more CO2 is actually a benefit to the earth" rather than a pollutant. In a 2014 appearance on CNBC's Squawk Box, Happer told host Andrew Ross Sorkin the "demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler."

You cannot even make this stuff up!

Yes, Trump actually picked someone who is comparing people concerned with the impact of climate change to Hitler and the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Also absolutely consistent with what we have seen, and know, of the Trump administration.

Are you surprised? Yeah, neither am I.

Trump Repeatedly Tries to Orchestrate Honors to Be Bestowed Upon Himself

Many conservatives cannot understand why so many progressives simply cannot stand Trump. It even reached a point where one friend (almost really a former friend at this point) asked me, not long into the new Trump administration, if I was so close-minded as to not give Trump a chance.

Frankly, I found that funny, given how close-minded Trump himself was, as well as his base. This was a guy who announced his candidacy by claiming Mexicans were criminals and rapists, who wanted to set up an unconstitutional national registry of Muslims, who mocked a disabled reporter by imitating him before his enthusiastic crowd, who made every point of boasting about how many women he could and did have, and who showed other xenophobic and ignorant tendencies consistently all along the way. And yet, according to this friend, I was the one who was being close-minded by not getting behind this man.

But it is almost comical that conservatives cannot understand why progressives despise Trump automatically, given their own clear revulsion of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, to name only the clearly most prominent names in recent Democratic party history over the past few decades. Republicans go to lengths to demonize the Carter years, even though he accurately forecast the problems that the nation would face over the next few decades (he actually was concerned about a future beyond the next election cycle, making him rather unique among politicians), and presented solutions to those two crises - achieving energy independence and confronting the moral crisis that was rotting the country to the core - which, had Americans taken him seriously and actually tried what he was suggesting, the nation would surely have been much better off. As far as Clinton is concerned, I remember seeing "Impeach Clinton" bumper stickers literally within the first three to four weeks of his then obviously young presidency, so they clearly never gave him a chance. And as far as Obama was concerned, it was the same thing: Republicans took a clear, and clearly stated, obstructionist approach towards him, basically making sure that he would not be able to get what he wanted to get done completed.

So, they should certainly understand why we who look upon Trump as basically a scumbag cannot give this truly pathetic man a chance.

One of the biggest turnoffs about Trump is his frankly pathetic neediness. He always, always needs to be the center of attention. Always needs to have his precious ego stoked. Always needs to get the credit for anything and everything good. Always needs to praise himself, to remind everyone of how great he clearly thinks he is.

Naturally, it was only a matter of time before this began to foster in his approach toward the presidency.

I have added a couple of links that illustrate this ridiculous, neediness. Indeed, whatever you think of Trump personally, no one on any side of the political aisle can deny that he is a megalomaniac or, in his case, MAGAlomaniac. If you listen to him, he can do no wrong, he has done more than any other president in history, and he has done all of it better. If you listen to him, he is saving the country, the country needed him, and he, and only he, could save the country.

The sad thing is that his supporters are so willing to indulge this clear loser. Why do I call him a loser? Because he cannot, and has not, delivered on his promises. He promised to make Mexico pay for the wall, and failed. He promised that he would not have time to play golf once in the White House, and he has played a tremendous amount of golf. He promised to revive the coal industry, and he could not do it. He promised to defeat ISIS within 30 days. He promised to overhaul the healthcare system and make sure that all Americans had access to affordable healthcare. Instead, he never even lifted a finger to begin such a plan, and simply tied his name to Paul Ryan's plan, which would make prices higher, and would force tens of millions of Americans without healthcare. We are now two plus years into his presidency, and even he had to admit that ISIS is still around and in Syria and Iraq (as well as other countries). He promised that he has a solid, fail-proof plan to pay off the national debt in eight years (he assumed automatically that he would win re-election, and sadly, he just might). Instead, he added two trillion to the national debt in his first two years, mostly due to his massive tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and for corporations.

Check.

Yes, this man is pathetic, and on a personal level. I literally cannot think of a single person in history who had a higher opinion of himself than Trump, or someone who needed his ego constantly stoked like Trump does. After all, who has ever needed his own name up on skyscrapers dominating modern cities like Trump does? Who literally breaks down upon hearing any criticism, and launches into vehement personal attacks, literally every time he hears himself criticized? Who proclaims historic levels of greatness with everything that he does, even though the end result of what he does is, frankly, crap? And who else is literally so practiced in the art of lying, that he makes up these wild praises that he supposedly receives from other world leaders? He literally invents some of these things.

The latest is how Trump was allegedly nominated by Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abi for the Nobel Peace Prize, to which Trump responded with a complete lack of humility that is his trademark, above all else:

"In fact, I think I can say this: Prime Minister Abe of Japan gave me the most beautiful copy of a letter that he sent to the people who give out a thing called the Nobel Prize. He said, “I have nominated you…” or “Respectfully, on behalf of Japan, I am asking them to give you the Nobel Peace Prize.” I said, “Thank you.” Many other people feel that way too. I’ll probably never get it, but that’s okay.

"They gave it to Obama. He didn’t even know what he got it for. He was there for about 15 seconds and he got the Nobel Prize. He said, “Oh, what did I get it for?”  With me, I probably will never get it."

So, here we see a few things that have become absolutely typical of what Trump does: Trump's typical megalomania, his vague assertions that "many other people" feel this way as well, and his total fixation with Barack Obama, and his constant need to undermine everything that Obama was or does.

If we dig a little deeper, we will find that this nomination was, itself, a ridiculous and self-serving thing orchestrated by Trump himself. Of course.

"Abe did indeed nominate Trump, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper reports, but there was a twist: The Japanese leader did it at the request of the White House. “The U.S. government ‘informally’ asked Tokyo to nominate Trump after he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June,” the paper reported, citing unnamed Japanese government sources. Abe was “acceding to a request from Washington” when he made the nomination last autumn, the paper said."

Now, I actually do feel that the Nobel Peace Prize that Obama received was justified. He had just gotten elected, and it was my personal feeling that he received this because he was not George W. Bush, and that it was an undeserved honor. Even Obama himself seemed to feel uncomfortable getting it.

However, that certainly does not mean that Trump deserves it. Frankly, that notion is laughable and ridiculous, regardless of how much he and/or his supporters feel he deserves it.

Finally, the other link is a story about how Trump basically tried to blackmail NASA into landing on Mars during his presidency. Again, it is pathetic, even sad, to see how needy and, frankly, how sick, this man is. Sometimes, it does indeed make me angry, even enraged, to see a man such as this taking such transparently desperate measures for his own name to be inflated even more. Other times - most other times, frankly - it makes me sad and shake my head to think that this man keeps getting empowered with his desperate and unhealthy approach to himself and his ridiculous ego. It is truly a sad state about the state of this nation, and what passes for leadership here in this mediocre day and age.

Bernie Sanders is Back & Running for the White House! But Can He Win?

This is me with Bernie Sanders during a book-signing event in New York City back in late 2016! It is also my profile picture for "The Charbor Chronicles," and I post this again proudly today, after Sanders announced his candidacy for the White House race in 2020.

Bernie's Back, Baby!

Can you feel the Bern?

Well, according to several early posts by supposed progressives who still have the hang-ups that Hillary's campaign planted back in 2016, a lot of people actually are not feeling the Bern. It is the same old same old, with some claiming to be truly progressive, or officially holding progressive stances (like Hillary in 2016) having too many question marks and clear conflicts of interest when you do even a little bit of digging into their past.

Still, there are some concerns for fans of Bernie Sanders, like me, as he now has officially entered the 2020 race to repeal and replace Donald Trump in the White House.

One article by Cameron Joseph made some valid points, citing three big reasons why Sanders likely cannot expect this to be necessarily as good or easy for him as 2016 was. Let's take a look at these three big reasons (I provide the counterarguments):

Reason Number One - He is not the only true progressive. Maybe not, but the only other true progressive that I see is Elizabeth Warren. She has been an outspoken advocate for a long time herself. But for the most part, the others are far more mainstream, and are basically impostors to the title of "true progressive," in much the same fashion as Hillary Clinton claimed to be the "true progressive" back in 2016. More on that with Reason Number Three.

Reason Number Two - Social issues are on the rise. Well, let's hope so. But the reason that they are on the rise is because (a) people are feeling the pressure of being small potatoes on a gigantic farm, and are feeling expendable and underappreciated. Which brings us to (b) Bernie Sanders himself, who has always been a champion of the average people, and who fought for causes to make things a lot fairer all of his life. This focus, and the truth of his words and his approach, won him enormous support during the 2016 campaign, and started to bring him enough success that he became a serious thorn on Hillary's side. In fact, I would suggest that he should have won the Democratic nomination, if not for Hillary asking illegally for help from the Democratic Party leadership, and also illegally receiving that help. Her team went out of their way to cast Sanders as the candidate for angry whites, clearly making him seem like the Donald Trump of the Democrats. Ridiculous, but that is how he was cast. And some people still believe it. But the social issues being such a huge thing is due in no small part to how Bernie Sanders stood up and shouted about them unashamedly and without fear of being labeled by FOX News and other conservative voices, which is something that most mainstream Democrats were, and in many cases still are, deathly afraid of. When it proved successful, suddenly there were a lot more mainstream Democrats willing to dip their toes in these waters. But Sanders is not merely dipping his toes and testing the waters. He has believed for a very long time, and made it his life's cause. In many respects, you can say that right now, he is the most prominent, and honest, face of major political and social activism in this country.

Reason Number Three - Hillary Clinton is not running. Well, hopefully not, anyway. Frankly, I thought it was pathetic unofficial collusion on the part of the Democrats to make her the de facto candidate long before the primary season had even really begun. They bought into the whole "she's next in line" thing, and in fact, I suspect that the lack of competition made her overconfident and weakened her. That is how previously largely unknown Bernie Sanders came to get a much bigger profile in the first place. This time, Sanders enters the race as one of the favorites, and with a very high public profile. Also, he remains one of the most trusted figures in politics. Kamala Harris, for example, entered the White House race championing universe healthcare for all. She got a little static for that from Republicans, and she recanted this position the very next day! Another candidate, Cory Booker from my own home state of New Jersey, took funds from healthcare industry players, and then turned around and made it more difficult for Americans to get cheaper drugs from Canada. Those are the kinds of liabilities and conflicts of interest that could, and frankly should, do these kinds of poser candidates in. Sanders is the real deal. When it comes to the genuine article of someone advocating for real positive change in this country, there is simply no one who can compete with Sanders in terms of legitimacy and consistency. Remember, his activist days go back to his youth, when he went down to the South to protest against Jim Crow segregation! So, yeah, he is the real deal, in a way that the others simply are not, other than Elizabeth Warren.

So, there you go. There are the three reasons.

But there is one that was not mentioned, and which I suspect might actually be enough to do Sanders in, and I merely touched upon it in the reasons above. That is the unfortunate light that Hillary Clinton, and to some degree FOX News and Breitbart and others, cast Bernie Sanders in, which is to say that he is a "fringe" candidate that cannot be taken seriously. Some members of the Hillary campaign admitted that they tried to cast him as the angry white vote, to portray him as exclusionary, and not all encompassing. That is wrong, a mistaken impression, but many mainstream Democrats still are committed to viewing him in this light, no matter how unfair or wrong it is. It seems that some people simply do not like Bernie for the sake of disliking Bernie, to the point that you have to wonder if they would even support him if he does pull this off enough to receive the Democratic nomination. That would be my personal main concern, and it is a real one!

Ultimately, however, time will tell. Let's see what happens in the ensuing months. But just like we saw in 2016, I not only would not be surprised, but outright expect some dirty play from some of the other major Democratic contenders.

Three Reasons Bernie Sanders Faces A Tougher Path In 2020 Than In 2016 by Cameron Joseph February 19, 2019:
