Sad news this week, as George Mendonsa, the obviously overjoyed sailor who kissed a woman, Greta Zimmer Friedman, at random in Time Square shortly after learning of the end of World War II, has died.
This was famously captured in what came to be one of the most iconic images of American history, when the suffering and uncertainty of the deadliest war in history was finally over. The United States had helped to liberate numerous nations, and had emerged as the world's leading superpower. It was a hopeful time, when people legitimately hoped and worked for a better future.
It is sad to see the "Greatest Generation" slowly but surely dying away.
Mendosa had fallen and suffered a seizure at an assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island. He is survived by his wife (married 70 years!) and his daughter. He was 95 years old.
