2026 World Cup Awarded to Canada, Mexico & USA

FIFA announced today that the 2026 World Cup has been rewarded to a unified bid between North American nations, specifically Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It had come down to this bid, or one by Morocco, which was trying for the fifth time to attract the World Cup tournament into that nation.

I really liked the unified North American bid for the 2026 World Cup. The idea of three countries sharing the biggest single sport tournament in the world was really a good one.

The United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, and Mexico hosted it a couple of times, back in 1970 and again in 1986. However, this will be the first time that Canada has ever hosted a World Cup.

Also, the 2026 World Cup will have another first: it will be the first time that 48 countries will compete. That makes it less likely that there would be some shocking absences in that World Cup, as there are with the one in Russia this year, when the United States, the Netherlands, and especially Italy will be conspicuous by their absence.

As it stands now, the United States would host the majority (60) games, including all elimination games from the quarterfinals onward, while Mexico and Canada would host 10 each.
