More News Regarding President Jimmy Carter

A picture that I took during the Jimmy Carter booksigning event at New Haven, Connecticut in early December, 2014. I wrote a blog entry about this, which was oublished on December 5, 2014. Here is the link:

A photo that I took from a booksigning with Jimmy Carter at Barnes & Noble on Fifth Avenue in New York City last year, which I took my son to go see (and get a few books signed by a former President). I wrote a review on it, on March 27, 2014, titled:

Jimmy Carter has had a very rich and fulfilling life so far, yet his energy at the age of 90 is truly surreal. His post-presidential career is often cites as the most successful in history, and it is now also the longest one in history, as well.

Here is a man who still travels the world in order to try and make it a better place in any way that he can help it be so. He fights diseases in Africa and Asia, tries to help poor rural villages to achieve some measure of independence and sustainability. On his personal vacation time, he helps to fix up homes for the poor with Habitat for Humanity. Through it all, he is a prolific author of books on a variety of topics. He is the only ex-president to have written a novel, but he has also written books about poetry, about growing older, about the political situation both here and abroad. He even wrote books about his relationship with his wife, Amy, as well as a book about his mother.

Of course, as a former head of state, he has also written his memoirs. And his publishing company, Simon and Schuster, just recently announced that Carter will be coming out with yet another book. It will be called "A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety" and is set to be released in July. The former president will elaborate on his impressions during his international travels since leaving the White House. He will also write about presidents since he left office, as well as his impressions on other world leaders.

Carter was in Minneapolis-St. Paul in recent days, to give a scheduled talk. But he made some news as well with some of the things that he said, including essentially an indictment on the leaders of the world today, saying that no one really stood out as a strong and true advocate for peace.

In an interview with MPR News' Tom Crann, President Carter discussed numerous things, but particularly addressed the absence of truly iconic, peace-loving world leaders that the world was blessed with in the past. Here is one quote from Carter:

"We don't have a global champion of peace like Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King Jr. or Mahatma Gandhi now. None of the government leaders who represent the five permanent members of the UN Security Council are notable for promoting peace. Among those leaders, I would say that China has been the most reluctant to get involved directly in conflict. I don't think China has been to war in the last 34 years since they made a brief intrusion into Vietnam whereas the United States has been almost constantly at war, except maybe for four years when I was in office."

Carter also received word from his former Vice-President, Walter Mondale, who also ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for the White House in 1984, ultimately losing big to President Ronald Reagan. Mondale was in the hospital with the flu, although Carter mentioned that he had spoken to his Vice-President, and that Mondale is "doing well."
