John Cusack: Obama Worse Than Bush & Nixon

Actor John Cussack has outspoken views about President Obama and, quite frankly, his views seem pretty well on point.

He blasted Obama for being more conservative than Nixon, and for continuing the worst excesses of the Bush administration.

In other words, his criticisms went far deeper than the traditional arguments that Republicans and other conservatives level at President Obama, that he is a socialist and a secret Muslim and not even an American, and that his supposedly liberal policies are destroying America. Cusack is criticizing Obama for something that most Americans do not realize: he is far too conservative to be considered a liberal, let alone a socialist or communist. This is something that I have felt very strongly to be one of the little secrets that Americans truly do not understand, much less believe. As Cusack rightly points out, the nation has grown so alarmingly conservative, that Obama, who is indeed to the right of where President Nixon stood on far too many issues, is now considered by some to be too liberal.

I felt (and feel) the same way about President Clinton. He was (and is) alarmingly conservative. Remember, his nickname during his presidency by some was "Republican light," and that came at a time when Americans collectively, and Republicans in particular, had already moved far to the right. The only thing that gave people the impression that he was a liberal or radical was the propaganda from a far right wing movement that had taken over what had once been the Republican party, which relentlessly labelled anything more moderate than this extreme as socialist or communist, giving the impression (for many Americans, anyway) that moderation was the extreme!

Think this is an exaggeration, or somehow dead wrong? Consider these arguments that Cusack makes, and ask yourself if this is, as some Republicans suggest, some hippie with communist leanings in the White House:

"Obama has certainly extended and hardened the cement on a lot of Bush’s post-9/11 Terror Inc. policies, so he’s very similar to Bush in every way that way,” Cusack told The Daily Beast. “His domestic policy is a bit different, but when you talk about drones, the American Empire, the NSA, civil liberties, attacks on journalism and whistleblowers — he’s as bad or worse than Bush.”

Cusack elaborated further about Obama's conservative policies:

“He hasn’t started as many wars, but he’s extended the ones we had, and I don’t even think Dick Cheney or Richard Nixon would say the president has the right to unilaterally decide whom he can kill around the world,” he said. “On Tuesdays, the president can just decide whom he wants to kill, and you know, since 9/11 there are magic words like ‘terror,’ and if you use magic words, you can justify any power grab you want.”

He blasted the major news media, particularly FOX and NBC, for shamelessly repeating lies and exaggerations, and basically dividing the country into red and blue state camps that saw only rivalries against one another:

“It’s amazing how many times I hear people talking and they say something that has been put into the echo chamber — and people repeat it!” he said. “When you have a blizzard of propaganda coming at you trying to divide you into red and blue.”
