The old button from the Environmental Club days which I just happened to find on Earth Day! It is a little beat up (particularly the ends of the ribbon), but no worse for the wear, I think. And it is one of the few items that I have left from those days, so it carries a lot of great memories for me! Nothing Changes Until You Do!
"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's gred."
~Mahatma Gandhi
"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future."
~John F. Kennedy
I posted a blog entry about climate change earlier, and so this entry, which includes plenty of links to articles relating to climate change, seemed appropriate.
It is particularly frustrating, perhaps, being an environmentalist, and caring about and loving the planet that supports our life system, while living in the United States.
The skepticism always seems to pop up, and it feels like many climate change deniers wear this belief (which is all that it really is, based on a lack of facts) with a measure of unjustifiable pride.
Consider that the Texas governor seems to prepare for potential military action against an invasion by President Obama, then less than a month later, appeals to President Obama for help once Texas was hit by those terrible floods. Yet, many supporters of that same governor got very offended when it was suggested that the record floods in Texas might be related to climate change/global warming.
I still find it amazing, truly staggering, that many Americans seem to buy the science of climate change skepticism, which is, of course, funded by big money from oil companies, while dismissing the evidence that the vast majority of the more objective scientific community believes.
Earlier this year, there was a vote about whether climate change was real, and the Senate voted 98 to 1 that it was indeed real. However, the Senate then refused to accept that human activity plays a significant role when it comes to climate change.
It seems obvious to me that much of the skepticism about recognizing the seriousness of global warming/climate change (remember that the argument not all that long ago was that it did not really exist in the first place), and especially to denying human activity as the main cause, is largely so that greedy corporations will not be burdened with pesky impositions like not dumping illegally and doing their part to limit emissions, even if it costs money.
But to many Americans, the skepticism falls squarely on the scientific community itself, because there is some huge conspiracy among the world's leading scientists to limit America's economic growth. Makes perfect sense, right?
