You know, some people are just obnoxious by nature.
Such is the case with Kanye West, who it seems sometimes just wants to make headlines for the sake of making headlines.
There he was again, making a fool of himself, detracting from a great moment in the career of a legendary musician, in order to promote Beyonce (again).
Not for the first time. Everybody remembers that this was what he did with Taylor Swift back in 2009, and it showed a lack of class and character, as well as a ridculously out of proportion ego and sense of opportunity for exposure.
This time, however, more people recognized his antics for what they were. His antics are getting old and repetitive.
Shirley Manson of Garbage wrote an open letter to Kanye West in response to his thrashing Beck.
The thing is that Beck has long been considered one of the most imaginative and talented musicians out there. He makes a point of producing music that sounds very different from album to album.
Picking on Beck makes no sense.
I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of Taylor Swift, but she has talent, for certain. It's just that she also seems very full of herself, and has money and fame out the wazoo, and the way that she carries herself seems to suggest a lack of humility.
But Beck? Really?
Let me just say right out: I am not familiar with Kanye West's music. I have actually seen him in concert twice (although I was not there to see him specifically either time). Some friends were fans of his, and one friend in particular was a huge Kanye fan.
The thing is, sometimes one's excesses really can get in the way of appreciating good talent. That's true in music, in writing, in art more generally, and even in sports. Hard to appreciate what someone has to offer artistically when an overbearing personality and sense of entitlement gets in the way.
