It was on this day forty years ago that the original Star Wars movie, then known simply as "Star Wars" but now better known as "Episode IV: A New Hope," was first released in theaters.
Obviously, it changed the course of movie history. The special effects were like nothing seen before, and it began right with the opening scene.
Did you know that the space vessel being pursued by the Imperial Star Destroyed in that very first scene was supposed to be the original Millenium Falcon, or that the Star Wars epic was George Lucas' answer to Flash Gordon, which was the movie he really had his eyes on following American Graffiti, only to see it go to someone else?
In any case, Star Wars has been a big part of my life for almost as long as that, as it has for so many other people of my generation and younger.
Here's to another forty years (at least!) of Star Wars!
