Frightening Warning About Reality of Authoritarianism Presently in the United States

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.”

― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

We had a chance - a real chance - here in the United States to get rid of Trump once and for all. After all, he lost the 2020 election quite convincingly, despite ridiculous conspiracy theorists insisting otherwise. Somehow, they never do provide that "irrefutable proof" that they keep insisting that are in their possessions, do they?

He was already gone. In fact, he had illustrated to one and all that he was unworthy of being trusted with power when he bent over backwards to try and keep it. Any reasonably intelligent person with an ounce of integrity would have to conclude that after January 6th.

But he never did go away fully, did he?

Personally, I suspect that a lot of Americans - I mean, an alarming percentage of Americans, between 30% to 40%, most likely - actually want a dictatorship. They want someone to do their thinking for them. To take care of what they perceive as problems, and to then tell them pretty little lies to believe while they carry their blankets around, ready to mentally go to sleep whenever the powers that be require them to do so.

Well, he stayed politically relevant. In fact, he kind of dominated American politics, didn't he?

So of course he won the 2024 election. You could see it coming from a long way off. At least if you were perceptive to certain grim realities, and not blinded by delusions or overly optimistic hopes or expectations. It felt to me like he was always going to be back. In fact, it felt inevitable within days of Biden taking office, when instead of being in legal trouble for his role on January 6th, Trump was holding one of his damn rallies yet again.

Let's face reality here: many aspects of the American democracy that we collectively took for granted are now already gone. A wanna be dictator is trying to make his personal dreams come true, and tens of millions of Americans are still applauding his every move and word, despite everything. In short, we might never get rid of him.

That is why I am sharing this particular Facebook post. No idea who the person who wrote this is, but this is a valid point. It's also a call to try and wake people up to reality, once and for all. We can no longer simply allow ourselves to dream that Trump will soon go away. The rumors of his failing health feel exaggerated to me. Those claims that he would soon be in prison never felt real to me. And that ridiculous notion that he is about to step down, or that the Epstein Files will finally do him in, or whatever in the hell else many people seem half-convinced will end this nightmare, those things simply are not likely to happen.

Wake up and face reality. This is really happening.

What, you don't like it?

Neither do I. Most of us don't, in fact.

Yet, that doesn't change the fact that fascists really are in power. And they are not about to give it up easily. If you thought that they were stubborn when trying to hang onto power back in 2020, just wait to see the lengths that they will go to now, in their second go around.

Trump has turned the United States into a dictatorship light. Light, for now, anyway. And he'll inevitably continue to make things worse, and to entrench his dictatorial desires even further, unless we actually do something about it.
