Thought that this was appropriate to post right now.
As I understand it, Trump has put up gigantic banners of his face in the nation's capital, with phrases meant to illustrate that he's one of us, and he's on our side.
Also, of course, he has troops patrolling the streets of the city.
Meanwhile, we have a secret police force where masked officers hiding their badges and any other form of identification raid stores and workplaces and neighborhoods, kidnapping people and sending them to detention centers without due process. They and their supporters are always on the lookout for an invisible enemy which we are told is everywhere, all at once. But they just happen to particularly be in Blue States and Democratic cities. The invisible yet always present "other."
All of this are scenes reminiscent of third world dictatorships. Many Americans never expected something like this to happen here. But Sinclair Lewis was right. It can happen here....and in fact has happened. We have watched our country take a decidedly fascist turn. The picture below by Matthew Gertz illustrates this grim reality. What we see is a scene which would not be surprising if it were a picture of Pyongyang, or Moscow, or perhaps some Latin American dictatorship from years ago.
Unfortunately, this is Washington, D.C., just days ago.
Big Brother is watching. In 2025, Trump has managed to turn back the clock all the way to 1984.
It has happened here.
