For quite some time, I have felt that we are collectively getting far too much entertainment from what feels like a tragic situation for the country, and indeed the world.
Right now, we have a sitting president who hardly even bothers to hide his dictatorial and fascist leanings anymore. All of the warning signs that we are losing our liberty, our freedom and even our democracy, are there for anyone to see. Yet he has this stubborn cult following, too numerous to overlook, and too militant to feel unthreatened, whom never question any single thing about their very flawed Dear Leader.
The world situation is hardly any better. Climate change is now being questioned and/or ignored by more and more people. The spirit of authoritarianism seems to be gaining traction all across the world, and not just in the United States. There are active wars and even genocides going on.
Yet, we seem to be having a good time with funny memes on social media, mocking many of these things. Sometimes, it feels to me to underscore the actual powerlessness most of us feel under these dire circumstances.
I am guilt of all of this myself. In fact, what I am posting here is actually a part of all of that, admittedly.
Still, I am trying to keep it light on weekends. Don't always succeed, but I am trying.
Below is a meme which, I felt, actually illustrates the point that I was just trying to make. Indeed, it feels like this country (and the world more generally) is indeed a bit like the Titanic, just as it begins to sink.
Take a look:
