Maybe you have heard this already, but one strange news story is from an obviously mad as hell CEO that is willing to go very far in his defense of gun rights.
James Yeager, the CEO of Tennessee-based Tactical Response, seems to be preparing for a civil war. He apparently feels that the United States has turned into a dictatorship, and warned patriots that they need to start preparing for war. Here's what he said directly:
"Vice-President (Joe) Biden is asking the president to bypass Congress and use executive privilege, executive order to ban assault rifles and to impose stricter gun control. Fuck that.
"I'm telling you that if that happens, it's going to spark a civil war, and I'll be glad to fire the first shot. I'm not putting up with it. You shouldn't put up with it. And I need all you patriots to start thinking about what you're going to do, load your damn mags, and make sure your rifle's clean, pack a backpack with some food in it and get ready to fight.
"I'm not fucking putting up with this. I'm not letting my country be ruled by a dictator. I'm not letting anybody take my guns! If it goes one inch further, I'm going to start killing people."
The promises of violence had been removed from Yeager's Youtube page, although the link still was available through Facebook.
I don't know what to think about such a thing. To me, this guy just seems like a nutcase, comparing the United States presently, in the aftermath of the horrible Sandy Hook tragedy, to perhaps Hitler's Germany, or the Stalin's Soviet Union. This is part of the danger of allowing just anybody to own guns, without much of an ability to check on their background.
What frightens me is that I know some people who also feel this way, who makes some general call for arms, and claim that "they" are coming for you, and soon. They will take your guns away before either killing you and your family, or sending you off to some concentration camp, or other such destination, where they can easily control you. Abolition of guns is the first step towards that, they claim.
No one is advocating a point blank ban on guns. Some limitations are being sought, particularly be means of background checks and mandatory registration, which frankly, given the deadly nature of such things, seems not only logical, but reasonable, as well. it has worked in other countries, and no, I am not referring to Hitler's Germany, or other extreme examples of nations with genocides throughout history. I am talking about Great Britain presently, after mass shootings in the eighties and nineties. I am referring to Australia after a mass shooting in Port Arthur in the mid-nineties. As a matter of fact, I dedicated an entire blog on the subject of how other nations responded following mass shootings like that, back on December 19th, less than a week after the Sandy Hook shootings, under the title "Mass Shootings and Responses: Here and Abroad".
To be truthful and frank, there are some real nuts out there. In this country, far too many nuts are allowed to have guns, without hardly any limitations. That's a scary thought. This guy, James Yeager, appears to be one. He is giving voice to an unreasonable, paranoid vision of the country that cannot be argued against, because how can you argue with people that are not reasonable in the least? I mean, this guy is saying, essentially, that good, patriotic citizens need to take to the woods, take plenty of food and ammo, and essentially, he seems to be calling on those that he considers patriots to wage guerilla warfare. No debate, nothing like that. Don't bother using reason or intelligence to give voice to your opinion. Nope. You don't get your way, exactly as you want it, and all of the time, then it's time to pack up some food and gun, boys, because we're going to war.
What especially makes me nervous is his saying "I'm going to start shooting people" without specifying which people he was planning on shooting. Is he going to focus on what he would perceive as legitimate military targets? Or, is he saying that he's going to go nuts, and start shooting randomly somewhere? Perhaps at some government office building somewhere, or perhaps at some mall? Maybe a school? Or maybe somewhere else? Is this perhaps going to try and attract attention to his cause, as he sees it?
I don't know, of course. But what I do know is that, by voicing his paranoia, and simultaneously threatening to employ violence to back that paranoid vision up, his threats serve as the strongest sign for the legitimacy for more restrictions on gun ownership, particularly on assault weapons and other non-hunting arms, that anyone could make. This is a scary man that can do some damage, apparently, and he is unwittingly making a stronger case for the need for some tightening of gun legislation, or background checks, or perhaps even, yes, an outright ban on assault weapons, better and more effectively than advocates for gun control laws ever could. .
