More Publications Refusing to Use "Redskins" to Describe Washington's Football Team

So, the activism by some against the use of the team name for Washington's NFL Football teams - the Washington Redskins - is heating up. The term "Redskins" was traditionally a racial slur describing native Americans, or Indians. I think it was Chris Rock who joked that having a team named the "Redskins" would be like calling a team  the "New York Niggers".

Of course, having a team with that name would be preposterous, and would arouse immediate and overwhelming indignation. Increasingly, people are wondering why it is, then, that the Washington football team uses "Redskins" as their official team name, and why this is deemed acceptable.

The name has generated some controversy in the past. But the opposition seems to be stronger, and far more organized, this time around. And perhaps now, the results are starting to show, and be taken more seriously, as well.

The latest? Several publications have now refused to use the word "Redskins" in their articles involving the team. The latest is Slate.

Here are a couple of articles that expand on why this decision was made, and what it is all about:

"Why Slate will no longer refer to Washington’s NFL team as the Redskins" by Dan Plotz of Slate, August 8, 2013
