Redskins Name Protestors Go To Team Bus in Denver

Here is yet another dating back a couple of years which I meant to publish, but never got around to.

It is not a major news story, as far as that goes. It relates to football, true. But it transcends football nonetheless, because the underlying issue is racism, and a professional sports team based in the nation's capital being allowed to use a racial slur as their nickname. I have heard the owners and managers of the team speak about it in terms of it being a harmless joke, to actually being a way of honoring the proud heritage of the natives people.

Still, the controversy continues, and despite the fact that present owner Daniel Snyder has sworn that he will never change the team's name or logo, the protests seem to be stepping up, with the franchise even having lost certain rights to profits from merchandise. If things like that continue, where it hits the franchise where it hurts most (in the wallet, of course), then indeed, there might be a point when they change their tune.

In the meantime, it looks to be yet another season of protests and controversy for the franchise.

Oh, and most likely, mediocrity on the football field, which is something that this once proud franchise was not known for, back in the eighties and early nineties.

In any case, here is the link to the article:

So, the Washington pro football team seems to be surrounded with controversy like never before.

True, the name issue has come up in the past. But never quite like this, and never so relentless.

This season, the issue of whether the team name "Redskins" should be changed has literally followed this team around everywhere they have gone. Even to road games, where criticisms are voiced nowadays to try and pressure the franchise to change it's name, once and for all.

Even the President has chimed in, much to the great pleasure of Native American groups that find the name offensive.

Still, owner Dan Snyder steadfastly refuses to change the name, claiming (at least for now) that he will never give in and change the name.

We'll see.
