Do I Have Your Consent - A New Way To Lessen Any Chance of Rape

I thought that this was a fascinating piece that reveals the more subtle manner in which rapes can occur, at times, if we're not careful.

Yes, when most people think of rape, they think of a man forcing himself physically onto a woman, and essentially having his way with her without her consent.

Of course, we also know that there is the date rape drug, which is intended to essentially knock out a woman, and make sure that she will not actually remember the episode that happens later. The man who gave her this drug then takes her someplace, and has her way with her. This might be a more subtle form of rape, but it is still rape.

But in this piece by Upworthy (see link below), a woman reveals just how easy rape can happen almost by accident. A woman might not want to have sex, but may ultimately engage in the act, against her will, for a variety of reasons. These can include (but are not limited to) simply not saying no, being embarrassed or pressured into it, not saying anything at all, one way or another, or being too shy to object.

When you think about it, it in fact becomes clear that rape can happen in this way much more easily than the more forceful version spoken of earlier, and with the guy not even fully aware that he is essentially forcing the woman to have sex, and can be thus guilty of rape, even if he himself would never have intended or expected this.

This video is helpful to show the difference. If it can be summed up in one statement, it is this:

"Not the absence of a no, but the presence of a yes."

Without that yes, that direct affirmation of consent, you may run the risk of forcing someone into something that they do not want to engage in, and that is a serious crime!
