I mentioned that one prominent Republican, Steve Scalise, was exposed to have had attended a function back in 2002 by EURO, a white supremacist organization founded by former Klansman David Duke.
Since then, he and the group have been blasted by many other politicians on both sides of the political aisle.
Well, apparently, Duke was watching, and took notice. In fact, he seems to be downright offended, outraged, and he is now threatening to reveal the names of quite a few other prominent politicians from both major parties!
The question then would be if we should believe him. But the fact of the matter is that, politicians being what they are, there really is no reason not to. How many shady deals, how many hidden endorsements, how many people in the background that politicians want to keep strictly in the background?
So, let's be honest: this is obviously not good news for anyone. Yes, many political opponents are using this high profile case to try and score political points to advance their careers. That is, of course, a very political thing to do, and I use that term with all of the slimiest connotations that we have come to expect from people who act in a political manner.
Here's the thing, though: this is reality. White supremacy, and racism in general, has never really gone away. Racism is a huge problem in this country, and it remains so to this day, even if the Civil Rights movement did away with legalized, entrenched Jim Crow racism.
Since that is the case, wouldn't it be better to actually know when politicians are acting in a decidedly immoral manner?
Not just in this case with racism, in fact, but in general? I think it would be very revealing to find out who the corporate sponsors are for each politician. Which one is bought and sold by the oil industry, or by the pharmaceutical industries, or the gun lobby, and then becomes an activist against the better interests of the American people.
In fact, I just had an online conversation with a friend of mine, and we were throwing around the idea of playful ways of informing the public about who politicians are sponsored by. He had a post suggesting that there should be warning labels, much like warning labels on foods, to reveal the high danger of special interest influence for each. I thought that it would be a good idea to have politician cards, much like Topps cards for baseball and football when we were growing up, complete with year by year statistics for both sponsors and voting records.
Do you agree? Any ideas that you wish to share? Please feel free to leave any comments or suggestions of your own!
