Some sad news recently, as a cultural icon, the Village Voice newsletter, ceased operations late last month.
It is sad news, as I always appreciated seeing issues of the Village Voice, from the 1980's onward. I still have a few old copies of some of my favorite ones, including one with a cartoon done in the theme of Curious George, but which had then President George W. Bush on the cover, suggesting that "Furious George" had "Gone to War."
The Village Voice came to be initially in 1955 by three New Yorkers - Dan Wolf, Edwin Fancher, and one f my favorite authors, the late great Norman Mailer. The New York Times article by Tyler Pager and Jaclyn Peiser described how it went from this more idealistic ownership, to the likes of one particularly notorious media mogul:
They assembled a crew of writers who engaged readers with their wit and provoked them with their penchant for argument. Later owners included Rupert Murdoch and the pet-food magnate Leonard Stern.
