Trump & Friends Keep Getting Away With What Nobody Else Seems To Be Able to Get Away With

Trump is the president again. This was the first full day of new Trump presidency, of his second term.

And once again, we are seeing him and his supporters getting away with everything.  He pardoned members of the Proud Boys and others who participated in January 6th. It feels like nobody else could have gotten away with things like that. But MAGA does, and regularly.

Look at what happened with Elon Musk. He gave what sure looked like the "Seig Heil" fascist-style arm salute. Twice. So far, other than widespread condemnation from the usual suspects in social media and late night comedians, there has not been much in the way of repercussions.

Trump also has said and done certain things at times which it feels, frankly, like nobody else would get away with. Like not putting his hand on the Bible when he was sworn in and took the oath of office yesterday. Can you imagine if Bill Clinton or Barrack Obama or Joe Biden had tried something like that?  FOX News and/or some other conservative pundits would have been fuming and crying foul, and loudly proclaiming the death of morals in America.

Ditto with when he suggests that he would prefer being and relaxing in the south of France instead of this country.

Here, specifically, is what he said:

"I could have been relaxing at Mar-a-Lago or the south of France, which I would prefer to being in this country frankly."

Again, how would that have been received if, say, Kamala Harris or Joe Biden had said something even remotely similar?

Or in the video below, when he stated that the United States is not so innocent, in terms of what has happened in American history.

Now, here's the strange thing: I don't actually mind that kind of stuff. There are things which I disagree, even vehemently, with Trump. But not putting his hand on the Bible is not one of them. Nor is his comment about preferring to be relaxing in the south of France, or about how Americans are not so innocent when it comes to their own history.

In fact, I agree with him on that. American history has been far bloodier and more divisive than most people seem to acknowledge.

Yet, it also feels like something which he can say and get away with it, scot-free. But others would never be able to suggest something like that.

Again, I can hardly imagine other presidents saying something like that, and it not generating serious controversy. What if Jimmy Carter had said that while in office? Or Bill Clinton? Or - gulp - Barack Obama, the "secret Muslim" who many doubted was even born in the United States?

My God, can you imagine the reaction to that one?

They would have crucified him for it.

But when it's Trump?

Hey man, that's okay.

It's tiresome, frankly.

Now, we have another four years to have to deal with the hypocrisy, while the world watches.
