Today marks the 45th anniversary of the first real news story that I have actual memories of.
Indeed, it was on this day 45 years ago that Mount. St. Helen's erupted. It was the first major volcanic eruption in the contiguous United States in modern times.
Which is why it seemed appropriate to post this particular blog about another volcano. Mount St Helen's is not in Oregon, but it is located closer to Portland, Oregon, than it is to Seattle, Washington.
Now, there is another volcano not far from Oregon, yet also not actually in Oregon, which is showing signs that it may erupt.
The volcano is Axial Seamount, and it is showing serious signs that it may erupt in the near future. Perhaps we will see it erupt at some point this year.
Of course, it is an underwater volcano, so things would be quite different than what happened at Mount St. Helen's.
Still, it is fascinating. And it seemed like this day, the 45th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helen's, would be a fitting day to publish this.
An underwater volcano off the coast of Oregon may be about to erupt by Denise Chow May 8, 2025:
A recent study found increased seismicity and swelling at Axial Seamount, suggesting an eruption could occur sometime this year.
